DUNKIRK — The city’s Independence Day celebrations have been approved.
At its Monday meeting, Dunkirk City Council sanctioned the holiday activities scheduled for July 3 at Dunkirk City Park.
The celebration will run throughout the day, with scheduled events beginning at noon with a parade through the city. Line-up will begin at 11 a.m. at Dunkirk City Park.
After the parade, the American Legion will host a flag-raising ceremony at 1 p.m. at the park. Lutheran Air’s medical helicopter will land on the softball field at 3 p.m., and there will be bingo at West Jay Community Center from 4 to 6 p.m. There will also be a car show at the park, with check-in beginning at 2 p.m., judging at 4 p.m. and presentation of awards at 5 p.m.
John Beatrice Band will perform from 7 to 9 p.m., with fireworks slated for dusk.
Throughout the day there will be bounce houses and a three-legged race for kids, and a keg toss for adults. There will also be a tug-of-war competition for adults with a cash prize for the winning team.
Several vendors will be serving food and drinks during the day as well, and the Dunkirk City Pool will offer free admission.
In other business, council members Jesse Bivens, Tom Johnson, Bryan Jessup, Kevin Hamilton and Christy Curts:
•OK’d a $317.43 adjustment for an underground water leak.
•At the Dunkirk Board of Works and Public Safety meeting, members Dan Watson, Mayor Jack Robbins and Bivens promoted Chase Gillette from part-time to full-time at the street department and approved payments of $13,492 and $1,700 to Peerless Midwest, Inc., $3,929.80 to Maximum Overdrive Transmission for work on a police vehicle, $1,402.71, $1,503.01 and $926.52 to Utility Supply Company and $840 to Shield’s Garage.
•Approved paying Spear Corporation $3,494 for chlorine and $1,150 for inspecting and preparing Dunkirk City Pool to open.
