Obituary
Dorothy Jean Ortlip, one of seven children of lifelong Fort Recovery residents John and Clara Rammel, died on her 94th birthday, Nov. 1, 2021, in Kirkwood, Missouri, of natural causes.
Mrs. Ortlip was the youngest of six siblings, all of whom preceded her in death. They were Gene Rammel, Dolores Reed, Thelma Brooks, Bob Rammel, Ralph Rammel and Lucille Matchett.
As a youngster, Mrs. Ortlip spent summers at the family farm outside Fort Recovery, where her mother, Clara Homan, grew up. Francis and Pete Homan, an aunt and uncle, oversaw the property then.
Mrs. Ortlip graduated from Fort Recovery High School in 1946 and the former Warner Beauty College in Fort Wayne in 1947, and she worked in a salon.
In the summer of 1948, she met Theodore “Ted” Ortlip at a Union City Country Club picnic for one of the local plants. Dorothy was there at the urging of her sister Dolores and a friend. The couple married in 1950 and spent 59 years together. Mr. Ortlip died in 2009 at age 85, also on his birthday.
The couple settled in Union City, Indiana, then moved to Tyler, Texas, in 1956, and to the Denver area in 1960. In 1965, with three sons in tow, the family moved to Ohio, spending two years in Hillsboro before moving to Galion.
Mrs. Ortlip worked in factory jobs, retiring along with her husband, in 1984. They spent a couple of years near Lake James, Indiana, before moving to Mountain Home, Arkansas. She was an active volunteer at a local hospital auxiliary there and as a longtime practitioner of needlepoint donated items for premature babies.
She spent the final six years of her life near family members in the St. Louis area.
Survivors include three sons, Fred Ortlip (wife: Rory) of Kirkwood, Missouri; Alan Ortlip (wife: Cathy) of Denver; and Russ Ortlip (wife: Diane) of Ballwin, Missouri; four grandchildren, Eric Ortlip of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Keith Ortlip of St. Louis, Valerie Riley of Kirkwood, Missouri, and Allison Pardee of Chicago; and seven great-grandchildren.
