Obituary

Joseph John Schick Jr., 73, Angola, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2021, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne.

Mr. Schick was born in Portland, Indiana, on Feb. 19, 1948. He was the son of the late Joseph J and Charlene (Johnson) Schick Sr.

He graduated from Dunkirk High School in 1966 where he earned several varsity letters in sports. From August 1966 to August 1967, he attended Ball College in Nashville, Tennessee, for body fender and welding. In February 1968 he entered the U.S. Army. He served in Vietnam with the 25th Infantry Division, earning a Bronze Star with a V Devise (Valor). After leaving Vietnam in July 1969 he was assigned to the 2nd Armored Division at Fort Hood, Texas, until his discharge in February 1970. He started college at Ball State University in September 1970, where he met his future wife. He graduated in February 1975 with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education.

Joseph obtained a teaching position in August 1976 in LaGrange, Indiana, with the Lakeland School Corporation where he taught middle school tech ed (shop) for 35 years. In 1981, he obtained his master’s degree from Ball State University. Besides teaching he coached middle school sports and high school football and track. He retired from teaching and coaching in June 2011.

He enjoyed playing golf, bowling and watching sports, especially Indiana University basketball and University of Notre Dame Football. He was a member of Life Changing Church and was an active member of the Angola American Legion Post #31 and life member of the VFW Post 7205 also of Angola. He really enjoyed snow birding in Gulf Shores, Alabama, with his wife of 46 years, Joyce Ellen (Baysinger) Schick. They were married Aug. 9, 1975, in Muncie, Indiana, and she survives in Angola.

He is also survived by a son Justin (Helen Pratt) Schick of Angola; brother Paul Schick of Dunkirk; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Janet Campbell of Fremont, Bill and Joanne Cranston of Fremont, and Julie Ingels of Fishers; and several nieces and nephews.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Rita Metcalfe; and three brothers-in-law, Harold Campbell, Mark Ingels and James Baysinger.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, 2021, at Feller and Clark Funeral Home, 1860 Center St., Auburn, Indiana, with Pastor Nate Drown and Greg Parker officiating. Burial will follow the service in Woodlawn Cemetery in Auburn with military honors conducted by the Angola American Legion Post #31. Calling is Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials can be given in Joseph’s name to the Shriners Hospital or Veteran of Foreign Wars.
