No matter on offense or defense, the Golden Eagles had little match for the Patriots.
Jay County High School’s girls basketball team soared past the Oak Hill Golden Eagles on Tuesday for a 60-22 victory.
“They’re a young team,” JCHS coach Kirk Comer said of Oak Hill (1-3), which had two sophomores in the starting lineup. “They’re learning and not a lot of experience. They’re a team that’s going to get a lot better as the season goes along but right now they just don’t have a lot of experience.
“We do have a lot of experience. It showed up tonight.”
Jay County (2-1), which is ranked eighth in Class 3A, opened the game by scoring the first eight points. It was later out front 19-1 when the team’s leading scorer Renna Schwieterman — she scored 43 points in the first two games — sat on the bench in foul trouble.
The Patriots went more than three minutes without scoring, but still managed to hold the Golden Eagles to just five more points.
“I thought we got off to a good start,” Comer said. Izzy Rodgers scored eight of the Patriots’ points, with Madison Dirksen (six points), Sophie Saxman (three) and Schwieterman (two) also contributing.
“We went into a lull when it was 19-1 and Renna picked up her second foul,” Comer continued. “We took her out and when we took her out we were stuck on 19 for a while. We have to find someone that can step up and get us a basket when we need a basket when Renna is not on the floor.”
Even when Schwieterman was in the game, though, she did more facilitate than scoring. She had more assists (five) than points (two) at halftime. She was dishing passes to her team on the perimeter, including Rodgers’ game-opening 3-pointer as well as a Dirksen triple.
Dirksen led all players with 15 points.
After leading Oak Hill 20-6 at the end of the first quarter, Jay County went into intermission ahead 32-8 and then opened the second half on a 10-0 run.
The IHSAA implemented a running clock if a team is leading by 35 points in the second half, and Jay County reached that threshold with 2:10 to play in the third quarter on a Breanna Dirksen basket assisted by Mabrey McIntire.
Prior to that Schwieterman, who earlier in the day was named Indiana Basketball Coaches Association/Franciscan Health Player of the Week nominee for District 2, had started to find the bottom of the net and ended her night with 13 points. Rodgers had 13 points as well.
“I like that we have three in double figures again,” Comer said. “We’ve got to get more paint touches. We can’t rely on just 3-pointers.”
Jay County was 7-of-22 (31%) from beyond the arc.
“There is going to come a time when you’re not hitting those threes and we’re going to have to get the ball in the paint. We need Gabi (Bilbrey) to have more paint touches because Gabi can score it in there.”
Comer and the Patriots were able to empty the bench in the latter part of the fourth quarter when the lead reached 32 points.
“I thought there was good minutes by a lot of girls,” Comer said, noting Saxman’s performance as a sophomore starter and classmate Breanna Dirksen’s effort as the first one off the bench. “We were able to do some things tonight with some younger girls and put them in positions we wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise.”
Jay County hits the road for four games, including a Friday meeting with Bellmont in Decatur. The Patriots will travel south to Winchester on Tuesday before opening Allen County Athletic Conference play Nov. 26 at Woodlan. The road swing ends with a Nov. 30 matchup with Northeastern.
“Just (taking it) one game at a time,” Comer said.

The Patriots (2-1) were down 7-5 at the end of the first period before outscoring the Golden Eagles by a 9-0 margin before halftime. A 9-2 edge in the third made it 23-9 before the final seven minutes.
Molly Muhlenkamp and Danielle May led Jay County with eight and seven points, respectively. Daisy Muhlenkamp, Cash Hollowell, Bella Denton, Meredith Dirksen and Cassie Petro had two points each.
