A new medical practice has opened in the area.

IU Health recently announced the opening of IU Health Ball Memorial Primary Care – Albany.

The new facility is located at 349 W. 1st St., Albany, and can be reached at (765) 780-9850. Physicians will begin seeing patients there Dec. 13.

Nurse practitioners Katie Lee, Kelsey Moore and Travis Newman will staff the new facility. All three earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing from Ball State University. 

Lee went on to get a post-master’s certificate as a family nurse practitioner, also at BSU. Moore is certified in basic life support and has also completed geriatric resource training. And Newman is certified in basic life support, advanced trauma life support, advanced cardiovascular life support, pediatric advanced life support.

All three are employed by IU Health Ball Memorial Physicians.



Bailey promoted

Christine Bailey has been promoted to director of social services at Swiss Village in Berne.

Bailey, a South Adams High School graduate, has served as director of healthcare admissions for Swiss Village since 2005. She started her new role Saturday.

“I have enjoyed working with Christine, and I am excited for her to start in this new position,” said Swiss Village vice president of healthcare services Sierra Saylor in a press release. “Christine is a dedicated employee who advocates for the residents and families of Swiss Village. Her long tenure speaks volumes to her dedication and desire to do all that she can for Swiss Village. I know that Christine will do well in this role.” 



Ardagh partners

Ardagh Glass Packaging – North America, a business of Ardagh Group, has partnered with Tröegs Independent Brewing to supply a 375-milliliter beer bottle for its Mad Elf Grand Cru.

Ardagh, which operates glass manufacturing facilities in Dunkirk and Winchester, is creating a bottle with a cork bulb finish. The once-a-year specialty beer had previously only been available in 750-milliliter bottles.

“Glass bottles have an important role in protecting the integrity of our customers’ products, while helping shape a beer’s identity and creating an extra dimension for creativity and branding,” said Ardagh chief commercial officer John T Shaddox in a press release. “Ardagh Glass Packaging enjoys collaborating with brands such as Tröegs to launch specialty beers in unique, sustainable glass bottles.”



Bowen honored

Bowen Center has earned the NextGen Healthcare 2021 Excellence in Integration Award.

The award honors a healthcare company that integrates an electronic medical records solution to improve workflows, automation, efficiency and delivery of services.

“As we continue transitioning to an integrated care model, it’s critical we have a system that supports both mental health care and physical care services, and that includes unique state reporting processes,” said Bowen Center senior vice president of operations Dr. Robert Ryan. “Our patients deserve nothing less than the best experience possible. Our Informatics team was integral to the success of this project and this award really helps highlight all their hard work.”

Bowen Center provides mental health and addiction recovery services in northeast Indiana, including Jay County.



Airport adds

Indianapolis International Airport last week celebrated its first direct flight to Palm Springs, California.

The first flight between the two cities on Allegiant Air was completed Thursday. 


“Today is a new day for Hoosiers looking to spend some sun-drenched time in the iconic desert oasis of Palm Springs,” said Indianapolis Airport Authority executive director Mario Rodriguez in a press release. “With Allegiant’s inaugural nonstop flight, Hoosiers now have convenient access to a top 10 California destination that was previously unserved out of Indy, and is a top U.S. leisure destination.”

Allegiant also plans to have its first flight from Indianapolis to Key West, Florida, in December.



Company acquired

Foam Holdings announced this week that it has acquired Fabricated Packaging Materials.

Foam Holdings is a portfolio company of Wynnchurch Capital, which owns Teledyne Portland Forge. Fabricated Packaging Materials makes and fabricates block molded expanded polystyrene.

“FPM is a strong fit with Foam Holdings and extends our footprint in our core market, as we continue to build a best-in-class solutions provider for our customers,” said Foam Holdings CEO Greg Silvestri in a press release. ”We believe FPM is highly strategic as we strive to provide our customers with industry-leading customer service, and we are excited to add FPM to our growing material solutions platform.”



Facilities approved

Government officials in DeKalb County, Illinois, last week OK’d ordinances that will allow Leeward Renewable Energy to construct two wind farms.

Leeward, which is planning a wind farm north of Dunkirk, is looking to build and operate a 500-megawatt solar farm and a 300-megawatt solar farm in DeKalb County.



Purdue hiring

Purdue University last week announced it has begun to hire new faculty as part of its five-year, $75 million Equity Task Force effort to diversify the racial makeup of its staff and students.

The first phase of the plan calls for 14 new faculty in public health. According to a press release, the university’s goal is to expand its proven public health program and better respond to workforce demands in Indiana and the region.

“Our land-grant mission is deeply rooted in the ideas of access and equity,” said Purdue vice provost for diversity and inclusion John Gates in a press release. “A more diverse faculty and student body lifts the research and learning enterprise of our entire university.”



Trial launched

Eli Lilly last week launched a head-to-head migraine trial with Biohaven’s Nurtec for its Emgality migraine prevention medication.

Eli Lilly, based in Indianapolis, will pit its once-monthly injectable Emgality against Biohaven’s Nurtec, a pill taken daily. The study will measure the proportion of patients with at least a 50% reduction in migraine days, Fierce Pharma reported. It is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2022.



Walgreens expanding

Walgreens Boots Alliance and VillageMD announced last week that they will open 20 new Village Medical at Walgreens primary care practices in the Dallas area in the next year.

The first of the new locations opened Oct. 26.

Walgreens had already expanded practices in Houston, El Paso and Austin in Texas.

“Dallas residents, and particularly patients who need ongoing care for chronic conditions, will benefit from our coordinated care team model and extended service hours through both in-person and virtual visits,” said Village Medical physician Dr. Joseph Ventimiglia in a press release. “By teaming up with Walgreens pharmacists, we’re able to better serve patients and streamline their healthcare experience.”

Overall, Walgreens plans to open 1,000 primary care practices across the country by 2027.



NextEra exercises

NextEra Energy Partners has exercised its option to buy the remaining minority stake in a portfolio of wind and solar assets for $885 million, Seeking Alpha reported this week.

The deal for NextEra, which owns and operates Bluff Point Wind Energy Center in Jay and Randolph counties, includes stock and $265 million in case. The portfolio includes wind and solar facilities.



CVS pushing

CVS Health on Thursday announced changes it is making in an effort to accelerate the implementation of its omnichannel health strategy, including naming Prem Shah to the new role of chief pharmacy officer. Michelle Peluso and Shah were also named co-residents of CVS Health’s retail business.

Also, the company has decided to create new store formats — one dedicated to primary care, an enhanced version of its HealthHUB locations focused on “everyday health and wellness,” and traditional CVS Pharmacy stores.

“Our retail stores are fundamental to our strategy and who we are as a company,” said CVS president and CEO Karen S. Lynch in a press release. “We remain focused on the competitive advantage provided by our presence in thousands of communities across the country …”



DG opens

Dollar General this month opened a new store in Gulf Shores, Alabama, bringing its total to 18,000 locations.

To celebrate the milestone, the company donated $18,000 to Gulf Shores Elementary School to promote literacy and education programs.

“With each new DG store opening, we are extending our scale for good to help American households stretch their budgets on essentials, create new career paths for employees, contribute tax revenue to local municipalities and extend education opportunities through the Dollar General Literacy Foundation,” said Dollar General CEO Todd Vasos in a press release. “From our first store in Kentucky in 1955 to today’s 18,000th store, our customers and our mission have remained at the heart of all we do, and we are proud to extend the positive benefits we bring to better serve Gulf Shores’ residents and tourists alike with our 18,000th store.”



Tyson reports

Tyson Foods last week announced its earnings results for the fourth quarter of its 2021 fiscal year.

The company, which operates Tyson Mexican Original in Portland, recorded $12.8 billion in sales for the fourth quarter of 2021, up from $11.5 billion the previous year. It had net income of $1.4 billion, which was more than double the $654 million from the same period in 2020.



Walmart announces

Walmart last week reported its earnings for the third quarter of its 2022 fiscal year.

The company showed total revenue of $140.5 billion, up 4.3% from the $134.7 billion it showed for the same period in fiscal 2021. Its U.S. sales went up to $96.6 billion from $88.4 billion a year earlier, an increase of 9.2%.



Advance reports

Advance Auto Parts last week announced its earnings report for the third quarter of 2021.

Advance reported $2.6 billion in net sales for the third quarter, up from $2.5 billion during the same quarter last year. Its profit came in at just under $170 million, up from $147 million for the third quarter of 2020.



O’Reilly appoints

O’Reilly Automotive has named Fred Whitfield to its board of directors.

Whitfield, 63, has served as president, vice chairman and minority owner of Hornet Sports and Entertainment since 2018. His appointment brings the O’Reilly board to 10 members.

“The expansion of the Company’s Board with Mr. Whitfield’s appointment is part of our ongoing focus to bolster the strength and diversity of our Board,” said O'Reilly chairman Greg Henslee in a press release. “Mr. Whitfield brings to the Company unique and extensive expertise in areas of the law and legal compliance, brand management and strategies, business development, and diversity and inclusion, as we continue to enhance our Board with the broad experience and skill sets that provide the governance and oversight …”



NBC Keeps

NBCUniversal, a division of Comcast, on Friday agreed to a six-year extension to air Premier League soccer on NBC, USA Network, Peacock and other services.

NBC has had coverage of the Premier League since 2013. The new agreement begins with the 2022-23 season.

“We are excited to come to this long-term extension with the Premier League,” said NBC Sports chairman Pete Bevacqua in a press release. “Our Premier League team, led by Jon Miller, has been incredibly dedicated to growing the Premier League in the United States over the last nine years. This new agreement is also a testament to the hard work of production, marketing and other areas of our company, as well as the tremendous partnership that has been established with the leadership and club owners of the Premier League.”



Co-founder dies

Peter S. Buck, 90, co-founder of Subway Restaurants, died Friday.

The Portland, Maine, native and longtime Connecticut resident helped launch the first Pete’s Super Submarine Sandwiches, which would become Subway, in 1965 in Connecticut. His philanthropy included a $30 million gift for a new patient-care building at Danbury Hospital, according to the New Haven Register.

“He was a shining example of a dedicated, hands-on leader, and an integral member of the Subway family,” said Subway CEO John Chidsey in a statement on Friday. “We are forever grateful for his countless contributions and I speak on behalf of all of us at Subway when I say that we will honor his legacy as we continue to build this incredible brand.”
