INDIANAPOLIS — For the second consecutive year, the Patriots won’t meet one of the powerhouses in the opener.

Jay County High School’s volleyball team received an opening-round matchup with the Norwell Knights as the IHSAA had its volleyball sectional tournament draw Sunday.

The Patriots (10-13) open the Class 3A Sectional 23 tournament at Bellmont at approximately 8 p.m. Oct. 14 against the Knights (7-16). The first match that night pits third-ranked Wapahani (22-3), which was the Class 2A runner-up last season, against the Delta Eagles (6-15). The winners Oct. 14 advance to the 1 p.m. Oct. 16 sectional semifinal.

Fifth-ranked and defending sectional champion Bellmont (22-5) meets No. 9 Heritage (20-4) at 6 p.m. Oct. 12, with the winner advancing to meet seventh-ranked Burris (23-5) in the sectional semifinal at 11 a.m. Oct. 16.

The championship is slated for 7 p.m. Oct. 16.



Spikers 1-1

Jay County’s volleyball team went 1-1 in the Patriot Volleyball Invitational it hosted Saturday.

The Patriots (10-13) defeated Northeastern (25-20, 27-25, 25-21) before falling to Leo (25-21, 25-22, 25-16).

Madison Dirksen paced the offense with 20 kills for the day, while Abbie Fields was second with nine kills. Madison Brunswick (six kills) and Lauren Brewster (five kills) helped the offense as well.

Brenna Haines racked up 31 digs, while Izzy Rodgers and Hannah Mulenkamp were second with 14 apiece. Rayln Chaffins chipped in a team-high six aces, and Rodgers tallied 33 assists.

Jay County’s junior varsity team also went 1-1, beating Anderson Prep (25-4, 25-14) before a loss to Leo (25-20, 25-21). Sophie Saxman posted team highs in assists (12), service points (11) and aces (eight). Bella Denton led the team with 13 kills.



Boys win finale

The Jay County boys soccer team won its regular season finale Saturday with a 2-1 victory against the Oak Hill Golden Eagles.

The Patriots head into today’s sectional opener at 8-4-1, and they are riding a three-game winning streak.

Cristian Marentes tallied his team-leading 12th goal of the season, while Matias Perod netted his first career goal. Gavin Muhlenkamp notched his third assist of the year.

Ian Ruiz turned away five shots from the Golden Eagles.

Jay County’s junior varsity team ended its year with a 3-1 loss. Brenden Runyon had the Patriots’ only goal.
