A Redkey man’s murder trial has been bumped back by about a month.
In Jay Circuit Court this week, the Cory M. Jones’ trial for the Aug. 22, 2020, murder of Shanna Jones of Dunkirk was rescheduled and is now set to start Nov. 29.
The five-day murder trial had been slated to begin Oct. 25. It had originally been scheduled for May, and was then moved to July and then October.
Shanna Jones was found dead late Aug. 22, 2020, when Jay County Sheriff’s Office was called to her 10402 W. 400 South, Dunkirk, home for a welfare check. She had been shot in the head.
Court documents filed in connection to the case say Ray Jones, the father of Cory Jones, placed the call for the welfare check. Police say Ray Jones told them that his son said he accidentally shot Shannon Jones. Cory Jones later sent his father a text that said he was “going 110 mph toward Illinois,” the document says.
The U.S. Marshal Service’s Fugitive Task Force arrested Cory Jones in Martinsburg, West Virginia, about 75 miles west of Baltimore, three days after the shooting. Jay County officers traveled to Martinsburg to interview him while he was being held there awaiting extradition. Court documents indicate that he told officers he had been in Florida for three weeks.
In Indiana, murder carries a sentence of 45 to 65 years with an advisory sentence of 55 years.
Court records show Cory Jones had previously been found guilty of or pleaded guilty to charges of battery resulting in bodily injury, a Class A misdemeanor, and felony charges of burglary and auto theft.
The trial for Cory Jones is one of four murder trials still scheduled for 2020. Already this year, Esther J. Stephen, Portland, and Shelby Hiestand, rural Portland, have been convicted of the Jan. 12, 2020, murder of Shea Briar. Stephen was sentenced to 55 years in prison while Hiestand’s sentencing is slated for Sept. 24. A third woman, Hannah Knapke, 20, Fort Recovery, is scheduled to be tried for Briar’s murder in November.
The trial for Roger Boyd, Portland, who is charged with the Sept. 5, 2020, murder of James P. Miller of Montpelier, is set for Feb. 7.
