Those who have lost their lives in service to their country will be honored next weekend in Portland.
Hudson Family Park will play host to this year’s Indiana Honor and Remember Gold Star Banquet on Sept. 25.
The event will feature Dave Bray USA, a musician and U.S. Navy member who refers to himself as a “Rock ’n’ Roll Patriot.” In addition to the concert, which is free, food and beverages will also be available.
It will open to Gold Star families and those who have lost a family member in the line of duty as a first responder at 3 p.m.
It will open to the public at 4 p.m.
Opening ceremonies are scheduled for 5 p.m., with closing ceremonies at 7:30 p.m. and various activities, including a silent auction, in between.
Library hosting
Jay County Public Library’s Fall Movie Challenge runs through Sept. 30.
Library patrons can complete challenge cards by watching from a selection of movie genres. Those who complete at least one card — there are four to choose from — will be entered into a drawing to win a movie night basket.
A meal planning workshop with Amanda Bullion of Jay County’s Purdue Extension Office is scheduled for 6 p.m. Sept. 30. She will discuss the meal planning process and give advice on shopping, coupons and bulk cooking.
Arts Place offers
The Jay County Campus of Arts Place is offering an ArtWorks class designed for homeschooled elementary school students.
The class, which would fulfill the students art curriculum, is open for registration. Students will learn about different art techniques, art history, art tools and the basics of drawing, painting and sculpting with artist Lindsay Edwards.
The cost is $130 and scholarships are available. Classes are scheduled to begin Sept. 30 and will run from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. through Dec. 2.
