Portland police arrested a North Vernon man this morning in connection with a local bank robbery.

James L. Mosley was found at Travelers Inn hotel of Fort Wayne about 3:30 a.m. today, about eight hours after police posted a notice on Facebook indicating that they were looking for him.

Mosley, 61, is charged with robbery, a Level 5 felony. He’s being held on a $10,000 bond in Jay County Jail.

Mosley been accused of entering Farmers and Merchants State Bank in Portland about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday and threatening bank tellers to give him an undisclosed amount of money, explained Portland Police Chief Mitch Sutton this morning.

Police logs say the suspect left the scene of the robbery in a red van. This morning, police filed a search warrant for a 2001 Nissan Quest.

Portland Police Department posted to its Facebook page at 7:08 p.m. that it was searching for Mosley. Indiana Crime Scene investigators, Fort Wayne Street Crimes Unit and Fort Wayne Federal Bureau of Investigations also responded to the scene of the robbery.

Later, Portland police received information via social media about Mosley and tracked him to Fort Wayne. Sutton, investigator Jeff Hopkins and assistant chief Steve Schlechty, assisted by Fort Wayne Police Department, arrested Mosley.

Police interviewed Mosley in Fort Wayne and Portland before he was booked into Jay County Jail about 5 a.m. today.

Mosley has had other criminal cases filed against him in Ripley, Allen, Rush, Union, Grant, DeKalb and Steuben counties. He pleaded guilty to numerous felony and misdemeanor charges, including corrupt business influence and home improvement fraud.

The investigation into the bank robbery is still ongoing, Sutton noted. He said he was pleased with how his department handled the search and apprehension of Mosley.

“The entire police department did a wonderful job to bring this to a very speedy conclusion,” he said, also noting help from state and Fort Wayne departments. “It was a collective operation, without everybody we couldn’t have done it.”
