Carol VanPelt



It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Carol J. VanPelt on Aug. 23, 2023. Carol was a resident of Fairview, Indiana, for 43 years along with her husband, James VanPelt, and a long line of beloved dogs.

Carol was a shining beacon of love, generosity and compassion. Her faith was the guiding star of her life, a source of strength and resilience that she used to inspire those around her. As a registered nurse and then nurse practitioner, Carol helped countless people in their times of need before and after her retirement from Jay County Hospital in 2007.

Carol was a loving wife and mother and so many other things. She was a creative and prolific seamstress, crocheter, gardener, baker, reader and football fan. She loved watching the Indianapolis Colts and Florida State University but, to be honest, she would watch any team play football whenever possible. She had an adventurous soul and loved to travel, visiting 49 of 50 states and numerous countries over the course of her life. Most of those 49 states were reached by car as she loved road trips. Carol grew up as a PK (preacher’s kid) and she spent countless hours putting her beautiful singing voice to good use in various community activities and churches, but primarily at Fairview Church, where she was an active member for years.

Carol leaves behind a legacy of love and faith. She is survived by her devoted husband of 43 years, James VanPelt; her loving daughters Lisa (Drew) Livezey Comingore and Jeanine (Wes) Northcut; dear sister Barbara (John) McMunn; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father the Rev. John Robert Boggs; mother Doris Maxine Boggs; sister Betty Kissinger; and brother Robert “Bobby” Boggs. 

As we mourn the loss of Carol, we also celebrate the remarkable life she led and the many ways she enriched our lives. As Maya Angelou once said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” True to this, Carol’s warmth and empathy touched the hearts of many and will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

A memorial service will be held at Fairview Church on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023. Visitation will take place at 1 p.m. followed by the memorial service at 2 p.m. Fairview Church is located at 11048, W. Indiana 28, Redkey, Indiana.
