MONROEVILLE — A slow start had the Patriots looking uphill.

A hard fought second half gave them a chance, but they just couldn’t get it done.

The Jay County High School boys soccer team couldn’t complete the comeback against the Heritage Patriots on Monday, falling 3-2.

Jay County (1-2-1, 1-1 Allen County Athletic Conference) gave up three unanswered goals in the first half.

Christian Ramos Morales had a goal and an assist in the half. Alex Martinez and Myo Min Tway had the other two goals in the half. Ian Hale and Twa Rit both had assists.

In the second half, Jay County started to find the goal. Levi Muhlenkamp first scored at the 17:58 mark. Just a minute later, he scored again to make it a 3-2 game with 16:55 left. They couldn’t find a third goal to force a shootout.

Osmar Gonzalez assisted Muhlenkamp on one of the goals. Heritage had 13 shots on goal while Jay County had 13. Both of the teams’ leaders, Dylan Marentes and Ramos Morales, had four.

Argylls best Patriots

FAIRMOUNT — Jay County’s boys tennis team fell to the Madison-Grant Argylls 4-1 on Monday.

The No. 2 doubles duo was the lone winner for the Patriots (3-5) in the match. Isaac Miller and Luke Muhlenkamp were swept by Brogan Brunt and Dalton Gibson in the first set before winning the next two for the victory 0-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Eli Dirksen gave Christopher Fox a tough time at the No. 2 singles but fell 6-4, 6-3.

In the No. 1 singles, Madison-Grant’s Luke Gilamn got the better of Abraham Dirksen for a 6-3, 6-2 win.

Liam Garringer couldn’t keep up with Clayton Hull in the No. 3 singles, losing 6-1, 6-1.

The No. 1 doubles pair of Sam Myers and Gage Sims fell to Ty Evans and Ben Pax 6-3, 6-1.

The JV team lost all four matches against the Argylls. The closest matches were Dylan Chafant in the No. 2 singles as well as Gabe Pinkerton and Chase Spencer  in the No. 2 doubles (both matches were 6-2).

JH runners dominate

DECATUR — The Jay County Junior High boys cross country team dominated Bellmont Middle School in a dual meet on Monday 17-39.

The girls team also competed, but Bellmont didn’t have enough athletes to compete as a team.

The Patriots had five of the top six scorers. Raif Beiswanger paced the Patriots, finishing first in 11:13.5.

Sam Wiggins and Rocky Beiswanger finished four tenths of a second apart from each other to finish second and third.

Grady Warvel (fifth) and Carson Westgerdes (sixth) were the final scorers for the boys.

A time of 12:51.8 earned Abby Fifer a first-place finish for the girls.

While the girls didn’t have a team to compete against, they earned the top four spots and their fifth runner was sixth which would have earned them 16 points.

Finishing second, third and fourth were Jessie Homan, Ava May and Brooklynn Byrum.
