Grandchild’s birthday is fast approaching
As I See It
By Diana Dolecki-
Our middle grandchild is having a birthday soon. I am notoriously bad at buying presents. I get something that I think someone will like and invariably they will hold it up with a quizzical expression. They will find a place to put it so that it will never see the light of day again.
Most of the time I rely on my daughter, Beth, for suggestions for her family. That works occasionally. If she gives me a website and code number along with a detailed description of the object wanted, then I have a 50-50 chance of getting something that they like.
The birthday boy, Jacob, likes fishing, snakes and all things creepy crawly. Needless to say, I do not like creepy crawly critters, especially snakes. In my opinion, snakes should live out their lives in secret. As long as I don’t see them, they are welcome to exist however they wish.
For a few years we made the long trip to Texas in March. We would celebrate Jacob’s birthday, my husband’s birthday and the birthdays of several other members of the family. We haven’t done that for a couple of years. The trip seems to get longer and longer every time we make it.
Plus, this year the unpredictable weather makes the trip even worse. So that is not an option we are considering no matter how much we miss them.
Last week when I was cleaning, I found a pile of old comic books. “Archie,” “Veronica” and their pals promptly got mailed to the kids. Beth said the kids thought the comics were cool. I wasn’t sure how they would react when faced with stories that had been printed years before they were born.
Life was so much simpler when I could grab a Tonka truck or other sturdy toy and they would happily play with it. They are rapidly outgrowing toys of any kind. I do offer them the choice of taking cash instead, but so far they haven’t taken me up on it.
It has been several years since we have been to Texas for a visit. It has been even longer since they have been here. They came up for Mom’s funeral. It was the first and only time that the boys and their dad had been here.
It seems that each kid has baseball, football or other school or sports events that keep them busy. Plus, Beth’s work schedule changes on a whim, as does her husband’s.
In the past, it has been easier for us to change our schedule than for them to change theirs. Now that traveling such long distances is getting more and more difficult, I don’t have a clue as to when we will get to see them in person again.
Thankfully, Facebook gives us a glimpse of their lives. I got a whole pile of pictures of them for my birthday. As much as I like that, it is not the same as being able to give them a hug whenever I want to. It also makes shopping for presents that much more challenging.
One way or another, I will find something that I think he will like.
