Phyllis Catherine “Blondie” Ritchie, 73, of Gaston, Indiana, formerly of Dunkirk, Indiana, passed away peacefully Thursday, April 27, 2023, while in the company of family members at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, Indiana.
Blondie was born in Winchester, Indiana, on March 14, 1950, a daughter of the late Edith Deon (Kinsey) Monroe and Edgar Conley. She was co-owner and operator of Crown City Lanes in Dunkirk, Indiana, with her loving husband Donald Ritchie for over 42 years. Prior to that she was employed for 10 years by Indiana Glass Manufacturing in Dunkirk, Indiana.
Blondie was a devoted member of the Gaston UMC, Dunkirk American Legion Women’s Auxiliary, Crown City Quilt Guild and Dunkirk Moose Lodge, served as Dunkirk Bowling Association secretary for 40 years, was the 1991 WIBC State Champion and was recently inducted into the Jay County Bowler’s Hall of Fame.
She was a very nurturing, compassionate and giving woman who loved taking care of others, spending time with her grandchildren and supporting them in their sporting events and Jay County band contests. She volunteered for the Secret Families Christmas Charity of Jay County, made senior quilts for all of her grandchildren and enjoyed reading, BINGO, going to casinos and following the 1950s and ’60s band R & R Classic.
Blondie is survived by her husband Donald; five children, Tammy Samuel (husband: Rick), Conny Knight, Michelle Back (husband: Bill), Carrie Newsome (husband: Greg) and Timothy Paul Ritchie (wife: Pam); 15 grandchildren; nine grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and special friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; mother- and father-in-law Otis and Edith Ritchie; and eight siblings, Darryl, Jim, Betty, Wilbur, Mike, Gayle, Chester and Larry.
Friends are invited to call Monday, May 8, 2023, from 5 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday, May 9, 2023, from noon to 1 p.m. at Meacham Funeral Home in Albany, Indiana. Funeral services will follow Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Tom Fett officiating. Burial will be held in Gardens of Memory Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Secret Families Christmas Charity of Jay County, P.O. Box 4, Dunkirk, IN 47336.
