Twenty-five years ago this week, Jay County residents were celebrating the state and local economy.
The May 14, 1998, edition of The Commercial Review featured a story about Indiana Lt. Gov. Joe Kernan visiting Jay County Development Corporation’s Industrial Appreciation Dinner at Portland Country Club.
Kernan, who as lieutenant governor also led the Indiana Department of Commerce, recognized the success of economic development efforts, complimenting the work of Jay County Development Corporation (JCDC).
“You have gone on offense when there are some who would say when times are good just sit back and relax,” said Kernan, the former mayor of South Bend. “It is Jay County and places like it … that are the winners. As much as (the state is) there to support, we can’t bring results.
“You best understand your problems, therefore you best understand the solutions … You have our commitment to continue to work with you to make this the kind of community … you can be proud of.”
Kernan's remarks included touting the efforts of the Gov. Frank O’Bannon administration, which included seeing the state’s bond rating bumped up to AA-plus. He said that change reflected fiscal responsibility shown by the O’Bannon administration and the Gov. Evan Bayh administration that preceded it.
JCDC executive director Bob Quadrozzi also thanked local business leaders.
“Without a solid industrial base, we wouldn’t have the steady growth we do in Jay County,” he said.
He pointed to fundraising efforts for Jay County Hospital, Jay County Public Library and Jay County Arts Council, as well as philanthropic work by Jay County United Way and The Portland Foundation as positive indicators.
“I enjoy being here and appreciate the cooperation I get,” Quadrozzi said.
