Mitch Sutton, age 57, a resident of Portland, passed away Thursday, May 11, 2023, at Albany Healthcare.
Mitch was a member and past president of the Portland Lion’s Club and the Jay County 4th of July Committee, and a past board member and president of the Portland Board of Aviation. He was a 1984 graduate of Jay County High School.
Mitch was a police dispatcher with Portland Police Department and Jay County Sheriff’s Office. In 1988, he was hired as a deputy with Jay County Sheriff’s Office. During his years at the sheriff’s office he was promoted to investigator, and also chief deputy, and retired in 2020. He was then appointed as the first officer in charge of courthouse security at Jay County Courthouse. In 2021, he was appointed as chief of police for Portland Police Department.
Mitch Sutton was born Feb. 13, 1966, in Portland, Indiana, the son of Donald and Toni (DuJardin) Sutton. He was married on July 16, 1988, to Amy Bryant.

Son — Alex Sutton (wife: Hannah), Muncie
Daughter — Molly Studebaker (husband: Preston), Mentone
His mother — Toni Sutton, Portland
Brother — Rocky Sutton (wife: Esther), Valparaiso
Grandchildren — Grayson, Emma, Kate and Griffin
He was preceded in death by his father, Don; and a brother, Jeff.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2023, at Asbury United Methodist Church in Portland.
A memorial service will follow at 4 p.m.
Memorials may be made to Heart to Heart Hospice.
