Russell D. Gates, age 70, a former resident of Portland, Indiana, passed away on Thursday, May 11, 2023, in Russiaville, Indiana, after a long-fought illness.
He was born in Muncie, Indiana, on Dec. 13, 1952, the son of Eugene Gates and Thelma Wolverton. He had three children with his former wife, Carol Gates. He was an electrician for Chrysler of Kokomo for 20 years before retiring in 2018. He graduated from high school in Tacoma, Washington. He enjoyed classic cars and was a huge lover of music.
Russ was a Vietnam War veteran. He worked on helicopters during his time of service.
Surviving are his three children, Chad (Jennifer) Gates, Seattle, Troy Gates, Ridgeville, Indiana, and Cathy Jarvis, Knoxville, Tennessee; two sisters, Bonnie Torgersen, Russiaville, Indiana, and Judy (Denny) Carter, Fairmount, Indiana; grandchildren, Adam Young and Johnathan Gates; and aunts, uncles, cousins and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, James Daniel Gates; sister, Anita Rose; and son-in-law, Nicholas Jarvis.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the DAV organization.
