REDKEY — Another officer is joining the force.
Redkey Town Council hired police officer Zach Moser during a special meeting Thursday.
Moser, a 2012 Jay County High School graduate, will begin working for Redkey on June 5. He was selected through a round of interviews with town marshal Kyle Denney and council vice president and former marshal Chance Retter.
“He’s local and he has experience,” said Retter. “I think he’ll do a good job for the town of Redkey.”
A Pennville resident, Moser served four years in the United States Marine Corps after high school and another year in the reserves division. During his time in the military, he worked motor transport, driving trucks and handling fuel and ammunition.
Moser also worked in the corrections department at Jay County Sheriff’s Office for four years and at Pendleton Correctional Facility for about a year. For the last roughly two years, he has volunteered with Pennville Police Department.
He plans to attend Indiana Law Enforcement Academy sometime in the next year.
Moser noted that he has family living in Redkey — Mark Leavell is his stepfather — and a willingness to help the town thrive.
“You know, they’ve been going through a lot of police officers, and I live here close, so I figure I can come and try to help out my community,” he said.
Moser is the second officer hired this month following Denney on May 5. Prior to Moser and Denney, Redkey had been without a police department since Retter resigned at the end of January. (Per Indiana law, he had to resign in order to remain on the town board, which he was elected to in January.)
