Carolyn Jo Shroyer, age 90, of Dunkirk, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 26, 2023, surrounded by family.

Carolyn was born on Sept. 9, 1932, in Muncie, Indiana. She was the only child of the late James Paul and Violet E. (Waymire) Antrim. She was a 1950 graduate of Royerton High School as valedictorian of her class. She was married to the late Herbert L. Shroyer, M.D., on Oct. 17, 1964. Together, they raised their blended family of 10 children in Dunkirk where he had a medical practice and she worked as a homemaker.

Carolyn attended Grace Baptist Church in Muncie for approximately 35 years where she was very active in assisting with the operation of Caleb’s Kin, a program serving the elderly. She was very passionate about her service to this group. She served for several years with “Hope in Crisis,” a ministry helping cancer patients. She was also active for many years in the Dunkirk Women’s Republican Club and served 13 years on the Professional Advisory Committee for the Jay County Hospital Home Health Care Agency. She was a co-founder of The Dunkirk Foundation.

Carolyn was very committed to her faith and her church. She enjoyed reading in her spare time and greatly enjoyed the company of her family. Her family affectionately knew her home as the “Gathering Place.” She enjoyed sewing, making many clothes for her children and grandchildren. Most of all she enjoyed hosting family gatherings and cooking for her extensive family.

She is survived by eight children, Lowell A. Shroyer (Pam) of Indianapolis, Leslie A. Forrest of Muncie, Joy L. Gregg (Bruce) of Ossian, Resa A. Robertson of Indianapolis, Julie D. Paulk (George) of Albany, Richard L. “Chuck” Huffman (Susan) of Dunkirk, Mary Kay Sterrett (Mike) of Ossian and Stephen H. Shroyer (Beth) of Brownsburg. In addition, she is survived by 25 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren, all of whom loved her dearly.

In addition to her parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband as well as a daughter, Rita J. Zerbe (Steve); a son, Paul T. Huffman; and a son-in-law, Tom Forrest.

Funeral services for Carolyn Shroyer will be at Garden View Funeral Home, Muncie, and interment will follow in the Gardens of Memory Mausoleum. Visitation will be on Thursday, June 1, beginning at 11 a.m. at the funeral home and the funeral service will immediately follow at 2 p.m. with Pastor Rory Bond of Grace Baptist Church officiating.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers memorials be given to The Dunkirk Foundation for the Dr. H. L. Shroyer Christian Love Scholarship Fund, PO Box, 202, Dunkirk, IN 47336.
