Leemon Ward Jr.

Leemon Matthew Ward Jr., 75, of Dunkirk, Indiana, passed away peacefully Friday, Sept. 29, 2023, while in the company of family members at his residence. 

“Junior” was born in Portland, Indiana, on Aug. 28, 1948, a son of the late Mary (Nichols) and Leemon M. Ward Sr. He was a graduate of Dunkirk High School and dedicated his career to Environment Technology.

“Junior” was the loving husband of the late Cynthia Lu Ward who he happily married on Sept. 4, 1990, and sadly lost on Nov. 4, 2010. He was a lifetime member of the Dunkirk Moose Lodge #1352 and enjoyed mushroom hunting, fishing, hunting, watching westerns, Andy Griffith, MASH, Indiana University basketball, Bob Knight, the Indianapolis Colts, the Cincinnati Reds, listening to bluegrass and country music, collecting knives, trips to Tennessee to visit family, slow dancing with his late wife and spending time with his kids and grandkids.

“Junior” is survived by four sons, Matthew Burkey, Craig Cassidy (Amanda), Cory Ward (Tressa) and Lonnie Ward; four daughters, Carolyn (Ward) Weagant, Carrie Martin (Jim), Candice Ackerman (William) and Mary Christine (Ward) Braun; 28 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Mary E. and Leemon M. Ward Sr.; wife Cynthia Lu Ward; one son, David A. Riley; one brother, William Raymond Ward; and one sister, Janice Arnold.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Oct. 6, 2023, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Dunkirk Church of the Nazarene. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. with Pastor Randy Davis officiating. Burial will be held in Dunkirk IOOF Cemetery.
