COLDWATER, Ohio — The Patriots had one final push left at the end.
However, a pair of three-run innings will prevent them from picking up their first win.
The Jay County High School baseball team fell to the Coldwater Cavaliers on Friday by a score of 9-5, leaving the Patriots winless to begin the season.
Down only one run heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, the game started to unravel for Jay County (0-4). Kade Sommers got the first two Coldwater batters out before a walk gave the Cavaliers (6-0) an opening. They followed the walk with a double and two singles that all scored a run and put the Cavaliers up 6-2.
JCHS chipped away in the top of the fifth inning with an RBI double by Parker Nichols, but three more runs in the bottom half started to put the game out of reach.
Back-to-back hits by Cody Rowles and Jackson Edwards took two runs back in the top of the sixth, but Coldwater turned the water off after to hold on for the win.
Sommers is saddled with the loss, having given up five earned runs on eight hits over 3.2 innings pitched.
Nichols’ two hits and two RBIs led the offensive effort.
