Seniors honored

Local students hauled in nearly $2 million.

During its annual Honors Night on Monday, Jay County High School’s seniors received awards and scholarships of $1,942,652.40.

Of that total, nearly $57,000 came from local scholarships and awards, along with $251,344.40 through The Portland Foundation. The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship came to just over $222,000 for Gage Sims. (Other finalists were Zion Beiswanger, Nick Lyons and Danielle May.)

The remaining $1.41 million coming via scholarships offered from colleges, universities and technical schools.

A total of 612 scholarships and awards were announced.

“Tonight we gathered to celebrate a remarkable journey of dedication, perseverance and achievement,” said assistant principal James Myers in closing comments. “Your commitment to excellence has not only elevated your futures, it also enriched our entire community. … Your passion, creativity and intellect have left a mark on our school that will continue to impact the world beyond these walls.
