Nash Keesling was selected as the inaugural Graphic Printing Company football player of the year.

“It’s awesome, really,” said Keesling. “I worked hard this year.”

Then, he shared the other reasons for his success.

“Definitely the guys behind me, the coaches and the other players,” he said. “You’re not anything without them. ... Other players, they open up plays you can make.”

Keesling had a massive season defensively from his linebacker position, recording 54 tackles and leading Delta with 6.5 sacks and 11.5 tackles for a loss.

He recovered two fumbles, including one that led to the highlight of his season. In a sectional-opening win over Heritage, Keesling scooped up the ball at the Eagles’ logo following a Landon Brooks strip sack and returned it 50 yards to the end zone for a touchdown.

“He’s just a special kid,” said Delta coach Chris Overholt. “He was just our heart and soul this year. From an emotional leader standpoint, he was the guy who provided the spark. ... 

“On top of that, just a tremendous, tremendous kid. He was the first kid to volunteer for scout team every week.

“And then just his production on the field. He gave guys fits. He probably had 12 pressures in the New Pal game. Every week, he found a way to get after the quarterback. ... He went against a lot of guys who were a lot bigger than him and he found a way to get it done.”
