BERNE — The Indians are only two boys deep this year. Yet, those two boys have already picked up a pair of victories.
The Fort Recovery High School boys swim team, consisting of just Caleb Smith and Carson Fullenkamp, took second place in a quad-meet at South Adams to open the season Monday.
The boys team only needed 30 points to take second place, beating Coldwater (28) and St. Henry (14). Minster claimed the top spot with 143 points.
The Wildcats also took first for the girls with 121 points, while St. Henry and Coldwater followed with 103 and 93 and FRHS trailed behind with 59.
The boys team (2-1) was powered by three first-place finishes. Smith won both of his events, the 50-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke, with times of 26.21 seconds and 1 minute, 5.87 seconds.
Fullenkamp’s time of 2:10.39 won him the 200 freestyle, and he claimed the runner-up spot in the 100 breaststroke.
Joelle Kaup was the top tanker for the Indian girls, claiming the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:08.66. She also placed second in the 100 butterfly.
The highest finish outside of Kaup came from Liza Knapke, who placed third in the 200 freestyle.
Fort falls
RICHMOND and COLDWATER, Ohio — The Fort Recovery boys bowling team dropped a pair of matches Wednesday and Saturday.
On Wednesday, the Indians traveled to Richmond 40 Bowl to take on the Richmond Red Devils, but fell 2,784-2,351.
Reece LeFevre led the Indians (1-3) with a 213.5 pin average after rolling a team-high 233 in the first game. Riley Grieshop and Riley Stammen also broke 200 against the Red Devils, shooting a 226 and 201, respectively.
The Indians fell to St. Henry 2,550-2,395 at Pla-Mor Lanes on Saturday.
LeFevre again led the Indians with a 174.5 average and the team-high game of 178 pins. The strongest game of the match came in the fifth baker game, as the Indians combined to knock down 191 pins.
Jay Splits
WINCHESTER — The Jay County Junior High School girls basketball teams split their games with Driver on Monday.
The Eighth grade team dominated Driver for a 51-5 victory. Claudia Dirksen led the scoring with 15 points, while Karsyn Schwieterman added 14.
Alyvia Schwieterman and Charlee Peters each had six points, while Kendall Schemenaur provided four. Kenzie Coy, Kyla Sims and Avery Snow all hit a shot as well.
The Patriots fell 14-13 in the seventh grade game. Boo Towell had a team-high of five points, while Brenna Weitzel contributed four. Rounding out the scoring, Emmi Clark and Bristol Kahlig each had a bucket.
