Rear ended
A Portland man crashed his car into the back of a vehicle a Dunkirk man was driving at the intersection of Indiana 67 and county road 75 South about 3:56 p.m. Monday.
Charles H. Bye, 78, told police he was driving his 2003 Buick Century northeast on the highway when he took off his glasses and wiped his eyes. He said when he looked back at the road, the 2016 Mazda in front of him was stopped in the road because of traffic from Jay County High School. He couldn’t stop before hitting the vehicle, which was driven by 21-year-old Chase W. Brotherton.
The Mazda is registered to Haddie D. Hummer of Montpelier. Damage is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Swerved for deer
A Portland teen complained of chest pain after she flipped the car she was driving to avoid a deer along Indiana 26 about 8:50 p.m. Sunday.
Kendel L. Rowles, 17, was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Spark along the highway near county road 400 East when a deer ran across the road. She told police she swerved to avoid hitting the deer, causing her to overcorrect and start skidding. The vehicle overturned several times, according to a Jay County Sheriff’s Office report.
The vehicle was towed, with damage estimated between $10,000 and $25,000.
