Barn fire
A fire in rural southwestern Jay County recently destroyed a barn.
Emergency personnel responded to a fire at 4565 W. 800 South, Portland, about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Portland, Redkey and Ridgeville fire departments arrived at the scene to extinguish the flames, with the barn on the ground by the time they arrived. Some trees near the barn were also damaged.
Responders suspect the fire may have started from a heat lamp being used for chickens in the barn.
According to online Geographic Information System data, the property is owned by Todd and Chelsea Howerton.
