ST. MARYS, Ohio — The Tribe only led by one point going into the final period. That’s when its seniors took over to stave off the Roughriders.
Kennedy Muhlenkamp and Karlie Niekamp combined for 13 fourth-quarter points as the Fort Recovery High School girls basketball team picked up a 44-37 win over the Memorial Roughriders on Tuesday.
Fort Recovery held a 29-28 advantage following the third quarter. The Indians made nine trips to the charity stripe in the final quarter, knocking down 9-of-17 (52.9%) of their free throws. Muhlenkamp led the way with seven points in the frame on one field goal and five free throws. Niekamp added another six points with two buckets.
Niekamp finished as the game’s leading scorer with 15 points, while Muhlenkamp had 14. Bridget Homan finished one short of double digits, while Makenna Huelskamp added five points and Cameron Muhlekamp had one.
The Indians (3-5) held a 7-point lead at the break after holding Memorial (2-6) to only two points in the second quarter.
Lower dominance
The Class 2A No. 9 Jay County boys wrestling team pulled off a 58-16 victory against the Norwell Knights Tuesday.
The Patriots (11-4) took the six lightest weight classes with four pins and two technical falls. Corbin Lothridge (1 minute, 16 seconds) and No. 12 Griffin Byrum (2:52) won the 106 and 113-pound matches with a pair of falls. The 120 and 126 contests were claimed with a pair of technical falls as Sylas Wenk came out on top 15-0 in the former and Cooper Glassford won the latter 16-1. The final two lightweight classes were won by fall as Alex Rivers (0:43) handled the 132 match and A.J. Heskett (1:43) got the pin in the 138 contest.
Jay County dropped four of the matches in the middle weight classes, before the wins picked back up with Mario Ardizzone (3:37) taking the 175 match by fall. The final two victories came by fall with Brice Coy wrapping up the 120 weight class in 2:25 and Freddie Lingo claiming the 215 contest in 1:26.
Archers shut out
The No. 3 Jay County girls wrestling team dominated the South Side Archers for a 60-0 win on Tuesday to finish with a perfect 9-0 in dual meets.
Only five matches were wrestled, as the Archers didn’t have athletes to fill in the seven lightest weight classes or the two heaviest. (The Patriots didn’t provide anyone to wrestle in four of those weight classes either.)
Only one of the contested matches left the first period, as Maleah Parsons needed 2 minutes, 21 seconds to pin Jessenia Garcia for the 145-pound victory.
Haley Ridenour got the fastest win, beating LaNya Taylor in just 40 seconds to claim the 170 weight class.
Both of the Patriots’ ranked wrestlers, No. 5 Lina Lingo and No. 9 Emily Manor, cruised to victory as well. Lingo won by fall over Ania Garcia in the 135-pound match, while Manor pinned Polly Patterson in the 140.
Madison Gage claimed the other victory, pinning Lahseya Forte 1:09 into the 155 contest.
