Mary E. Gunter, age 96, a resident of Portland, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2024, at her home in Portland.
Mary was born on June 6, 1927, in Hartford City, Indiana, the daughter of William Maddox Sr. and Mary (McCombs) Maddox. Mary worked for Sheller Globe in Montpelier for 28 years, retiring in 1988.
She was a life member of the DAV. Mary married Grover Gunter on Dec. 7, 1999, and he passed away on Sept. 21, 2002.

Her children — Bobbie Siegrist (husband: John), Portland, Indiana, Darrell Derringer, Portland, Indiana, and Deanna Derringer, Portland, Indiana
Stepdaughter — Mary Weaver (husband: Gary), Bryant, Indiana
Siblings: Margaret Oyler – Muncie, Indiana, Roberta Riggs, Poneto, Indiana, Larry Maddox (wife: Karen), Hartford City, Indiana, and Charles Maddox (wife: Martha), Hartford City, Indiana, Joyce Jenkins, South Bend, Indiana, and Linda Stroup (husband: Paul), Elkhart, Indiana
Ten grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren
Three step-grandchildren
She was preceded in death by her husband Grover Gunter; and her children Bill Whitacre and Caryn Radziejewski.
Visitation will be held on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Williamson-Spencer and Penrod Funeral Home in Portland. Funeral services will follow at 4 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Pastor Steve Arnold will officiate and burial will be held at a later date at Wells Cemetery, northwest of Portland.
