Mary Hammond

Mom passed away peacefully at The Waters of Dunkirk, Indiana, following a courageous battle with dementia.

She will be joining her sweetheart, Jack, whom she met 72 years ago and married three weeks after meeting him. They were happily married for 68 years. Her first love was her Lord and Savior, whom she served by playing the piano any time she was asked whether it be at church or any place gospel music could be played. Jack was her love, second only to her Savior and Jack is waiting for her at her heavenly home.

She loved her husband and four sons and set an example of what God called a Godly wife and mother. She provided a home that was second to none and the one thing it was filled with was love. She and Jack resided near Redkey, Indiana, for the past 59 years. They served the Lord together for the last 56 years. In their free time, they hunted and fished together, and Jack always said Mary could out-fish him. He was even known to let her fish go so that his would be the biggest. Her life was full, raising four boys and keeping a Godly home for her family. She went to work for the two youngest boys at JJ Day on a temporary basis that lasted 17 years. She was a very hard-working and God-fearing wife and mother.

She would always make time for the grandchildren and then the great-grandchildren. She has three great-great-grandchildren, which dementia deprived her of. She will be sorely missed by her sons, along with all of her family, including her daughters-in-law, grandchildren, nieces and nephews and all the family from all the churches that her and Jack attended throughout the years. She will now be in the presence of her Lord and Savior whom she served for the entirety of her life.

Surviving are children, Charles Duane (Cathy Sue) Hammond and Jeffery Ward Hammond; daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Hammond; grandchildren Michelle, Melissa, Benjamin, Jason, Jessica, Adam, Travis, Taran, Dustin and Jeremy; 23 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jack Leroy Hammond; parents Jack D. and Esther Pauline (Hickman) Ratcliff; brother Robert Euguene Ratcliff; sons Stephen Alan Hammond and Jack Franklin Hammond; and granddaughter Aubrey Jane, who Mary Jane picked up along her journey to her Heavenly Home on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2024. Aubrey Jane and Mary Jane will live on in our hearts forever.

Services for Mary Hammond will be held at Garden View Funeral Home in Muncie, Indiana, at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 19, 2024, with Pastor Lloyd Moles officiating. Visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be in I.O.O.F in Pennville, Indiana.
