Patriots end season with mercy rule victory

Local roundup

The Patriots don’t know who they’ll be facing in the sectional semifinal, but they will be riding a four game win streak.

The Jay County High School girls soccer team closed the regular season with a 9-0 domination of the Muncie Central Bearcats on Thursday.

Six players scored goals for the Patriots (11-5), with Morgan DeHoff leading the way. The senior recorded her first hat trick of the season, while playing in her final game on the turf at Harold E. Schultz Stadium. DeHoff found the net twice in the first 16 minutes and secured her third goal with a header off of an Aixa Lopez corner kick three minutes into the second half.

DeHoff also assisted Krishna Flores — who also assisted a London Lloyd score in the first half — on the game-ending goal with 12 minutes, 13 seconds, remaining.

Along with her assist, Lopez found the net twice, once in each half.

Ariel Beiswanger got the opportunity to set away from the back line and play some offense and it resulted in her first career goal at the 21:46 mark in the second half.

Jenna Dues added the final score from the first half. Goalkeeper Maleah Parsons only needed to make four saves to keep the game clean.

Spikers struggle

VERSAILLES, Ohio — The Fort Recovery volleyball team dropped its fifth match in a row in a 23-25, 25-19, 25-11, 25-15 defeat at the hands of the Versailles Tigers on Thursday.

Despite taking the first set, the Indians (8-11, 1-6 Midwest Athletic Conference) couldn’t keep up with the offense of Kiley May (16 kills) and  Sarah Stammen (13). They also gave up nine aces when Taylor Wagner served the ball as Versailles (10-8, 4-3 MAC) notched 18 in total.

Cameron Muhlenkamp and Karlie Niekamp led the offensive effort with eight kills apiece.

Karlie Niekamp and Bridget Homan led the defensive effort at the net with four and three kills, respectively. In the back row, Kenna Dues dug out the ball 12 times, while Kennedy Muhlenkamp did so 11 times.

Jay falls

MONROEVILLE — Jay County’s volleyball team closed out Allen County Athletic Conference play with a 25-9, 25-21, 24-26, 25-20 loss to the Heritage Patriots on Thursday.

The loss slipped Jay County (10-10, 4-2 ACAC) to third in the conference. (It can tie for runner-up if Adams Central loses to Southern Wells on Oct. 10.)

Hallie Schwieterman tied her career high in kills by putting down the ball 19 times. Mya Kunkler followed Schwieterman’s effort with 11 kills.

Paisley Fugiett totalled 30 assists to guide the offense. She also had a team-high three aces.

Maria Hemmelgarn blocked four attacks to defend the net, while Fugiett (14 digs) and Brenna Bailey (11) kept the ball off the ground from the back line.
