Janice Hurst

Janice “Jan” Hurst, age 68, a resident of rural Bryant, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024, at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie.

Jan was born Dec. 9, 1955, in New Castle, Indiana, the daughter of William Frederick and Ruth Ann (Mesengale) Hayworth. She married William “Bill” Hurst on Jan. 26, 1991. 

Jan graduated from New Castle High School and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Ball State University. She worked for Jay School Corporation at East Jay Middle School and West Jay Middle School as an art teacher for 34 years, retiring in 2012. She was a member of Headwaters Heritage and Balbec Historical Club. She was a member of Friends Church in Pennville and attended Hickory Grove Church.

Her husband — William “Bill” Hurst, rural Bryant, Indiana 

Her children — Dustin Tuel (Stephnie Rodriguez), Pennville, Indiana, and Elizabeth Arnold (husband: Shea), Fillmore, Indiana 

Two grandchildren — Hrmny and William Tuel

Sister — Judy Stevens (husband: Steve), New Castle, Indiana 

Aunts — Lee Miller, New Castle, Indiana, and Norma Hayworth, Lewisville, Indiana 

Visitation will be held on Monday, Oct. 14, 2024 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Williamson-Spencer and Penrod Funeral Home in Portland. Funeral services will follow at 7 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.
