Dorothy Burgess

Dorothy J. Burgess, age 87, of Portland passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2024, at Persimmon Ridge Healthcare in Portland. 

She was born in Portland on Jan. 14, 1937, the daughter of David W. and Nettie Mildred (Ervin) Walker. She was married on June 16, 1954, to Willord “Bill” Burgess and he passed away on April 15, 1994. Dorothy retired from Franklin Electric, was a Portland High School graduate and enjoyed crocheting and embroidering.

Surviving is one son, Terry Burgess of Portland; two daughters, Carla Burgess (husband: Greg Guntle) of Brownsburg and Ginger Shawver (companion: Ed May) of Portland; one brother, Perry Walker (wife: Connie) of Portland; one sister, Doris Zimmerman (husband: Tom) of Portland; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, David Dale Walker.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Sept. 7, at 11 a.m. in the Baird-Freeman Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Stahl Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Jay County Cancer Society.
