Jay County boys soccer picks off Yorktown

Local roundup

The Patriots recently took a tough blow from Heritage for their first loss of the season.

It didn’t take long to bounce back, as they found success against a sectional opponent.

The Jay County High School boys soccer got back in the win column by beating the Yorktown Tigers 3-2 on Thursday.

After an early goal by the Tigers (3-4-1) sophomore Emmitt Reynolds got Jay County on the board on Levi Muhlenkamp’s first assist of the year to keep the game tied seven minutes in.

They claimed the lead two minutes later when Dylan Marentes found Blake Collins for the score.

JCHS hurt its cause with an own-goal early in the second half, but its strikers made up for it as Reynolds found Muhlenkamp for fourth time this season. Muhlenkamp leads Jay County with 14 of its 21 goals.

Peyton Yowell manned the goal after a night off against Heritage, saving eight shots.

Perfect in ACAC

The Jay County volleyball team continued its strong start in Allen County Athletic Conference play with a 18-25, 25-14, 20-25, 25-12, 15-11 victory over the reigning champion Woodlan Warriors on Thursday.

The middle blockers dominated the offense for Jay County (5-3, 2-0 ACAC), totalling 33 kills. Maria Hemmelgarn led all hitters with 17 kills, while Brenna Schmiesing added 10 and Mya Kunkler totaled six. Outside hitter Hallie Schwieterman put 11 balls down for the Patriots.

Paisley Fugiett assisted attackers 38 times.

Schmiesing led the defensive effort at the net with four blocks. Kunkler sent back three shots, while Hemmelgarn and Schwieterman added two.

The back row had a strong defensive presence as well. Kayla Jetmore led the bunch with 21 digs, while Brenna Bailey and Elizabeth Barnnett followed with 18 and 11, respectively.

Slide continues

The Fort Recovery boys golf team continued to slip as it dropped the final MAC match of the season 161-164 to St. Henry on Thursday.

Keegan Muhlenkamp bounced back from a tough day on Tuesday to shoot a team-low 38. He trailed match medalist Jack Buschur by just one stroke.

Muhlenkamp never shot worse than a bogey, making par seven times and bogey three.

Reece LeFevre followed with a 40, fueled by six pars in the match on the 10th, 11th, 13th, 15th, 17th and 18th.

Eli Lennartz made par three times and bogey five en route to a 42. Caleb Smith and Riley Grieshop rounded out the team score with rounds of 44.

Mason Diller’s 50 didn’t affect the final.

Netters lose

Jay County’s boys tennis team opened ACAC play with a 4-1 loss on Thursday to the reigning champion Bluffton Tigers.

Eli Dirksen pulled off the only victory for Jay County (3-7, 0-1 ACAC) by beating Nolan Lambert 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles match.

The next closest match came from the No. 3 singles position as Gabe Pinkerton fell to Bluffton’s Jacob Ribich 6-4, 6-2.

Both doubles pairs — Kayden Carpenter and Alex Miller at No. 1 and Jacob Monroe and Carter Wellmann at No. 2 — lost their matches 6-2, 6-1.

Tucker Griffin fell in the No. 2 singles match 6-1, 6-1 to Anthony Hartman.

Carson Westgerdes claimed the only junior varsity win in seven matches with an 8-4 triumph.

Struggles in MAC

NEW BREMEN, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s volleyball team is still looking for its first MAC win after losing to the Division VI No. 4 New Bremen Cardinals 25-13, 25-17, 25-17 on Thursday.

The Indians (6-4, 0-3 MAC) never got their offense going, as the attacking leader, Cameron Muhlenkamp, only had six kills. Karlie Niekamp followed with four, while Kennedy Muhlenkamp and Brynn Willmann each had two.

Without many kills, Kayla Heitkamp only tallied 12 assists.

FRHS only found two aces in the match, those coming from Kennedy Muhlenkamp and Bridget Homan.

Niekamp’s two blocks lead the Indians, while Kennedy Muhlenkamp had the most digs with four.

New Bremen (9-1, 2-1 MAC) helped out the Indians with 16 hitting errors and nine service errors.

JC shut out

CONVERSE — The Oak Hill Golden Eagles held the Jay County girls soccer team scoreless in a 2-0 defeat on Thursday.

While Jay County (5-3, 3-0 ACAC) has dominated in conference play, the loss to Oak Hill (8-0-1) slips it under .500 in non-conference games.

While two goals slipped through, Maleah Parsons managed to save 18 shots, a new career-high for one game. She previously stopped 14 scoring attempts on Aug. 29 in a 3-0 loss at Coldwater.

JCHS will get a chance to bounce back today with a game against South Adams.
