The Patriots picked up a giant win on Tuesday. Two days later, they kept the ball rolling.
Jay County High School’s volleyball team picked up a 25-11, 25-15, 25-20 victory over the Muncie Central Bearcats on Thursday.
The offense was handled by committee as Maria Hemmelgarn, Mya Kunkler and Hallie Schwieterman all had a team-high four kills. Brenna Schmiesing followed with three, Elizabeth Barnett had two and Paisley Fugiett and Chloe Byrum each had one.
Behind the service line, Lani Muhlenkamp had four aces and Carley Trinidad had three.
Defensively, Kunkler led with seven block assists while Trinidad had six. Barnett had 12 digs.
Fugiett had 12 assists for Jay County (3-1) and Ella Rigby added two.
LeFevre leads
MINSTER, Ohio — Reece LeFevre led the Fort Recovery boys golf team to a 173-193 win over the New Knoxville Rangers at Arrowhead Golf Course on Thursday.
LeFevre shot a one-over-par 37 to earn match medalist honors. He opened the round with a par before shooting back-to-back bogeys. He then strung together five consecutive pars before finishing with a birdie.
John Gabel led the Rangers with 38 strokes.
The next scores for the Indians (7-3, 4-2 Midwest Athletic Conference) came from Caleb Smith with a 43 and Andrew Rehmert with a 44.
Luke Fortkamp’s 49 rounded out the team score for FRHS.
Carson Fullenkamp carded a 50, while Garrett Diller had a 54, neither of which affected the final.
Tribe slips
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery volleyball team dropped the first Midwest Athletic Conference match of the year on Thursday to the Marion Local Flyers 25-23, 25-13, 25-8.
Cameron Muhlenkamp and Brynn Willmann put up a team high in kills as each put down six balls. Bridget Homan and Hope Evers added three apiece as well.
Kayla Gaerke led the defensive effort from the back row with 10 digs. Willmann supported at the net, recording two of the team’s six blocks.
Five Indians (1-2, 0-1 MAC) served up aces, while the team went 43-of-45 on service attempts.
FRHS will look to get back on track as it hosts Arcanum today.
Patriots fall
Jay County’s girls soccer team suffered its first loss of the season as the Coldwater Cavaliers left Portland with a 2-1 victory on Thursday.
The Patriots (2-1) struck first as freshman Ayla Jackson scored her first career goal with 32 minutes, 25 seconds, remaining in the first half.
JCHS carried a 1-0 lead into halftime, but fouled a Cavalier inside the box to even the score part way through the second half. Coldwater (3-0-1) took the lead with 15:56 remaining in the game.
Maleah Parsons had to work hard in the goal, making 18 saves while suffering the loss.
Ridenour leads
BERNE — The Jay County girls golf team came four strokes short of the South Adams Starfires in Thursday’s 217-221 loss at Wabash Valley Golf Club.
While the Patriots didn’t walk away with the victory, Alexa Ridenour earned match medalist honors for the first time in her career, and this season for all the Patriots, by shooting a 52. Ridenour made bogey three times on the second, fourth and ninth holes.
Kendall Minger led the Starfires with a round of 53. Coming in just behind her was Jay County’s Bailey Towell with a 54.
Elizabeth Brunswick carded a 55, but JCHS failed to get a fourth score in the 50s as Erin Aker shot a 60 and Crystal Swartzentruber had a 62 that didn’t affect the final.
