OSSIAN — The boys won a majority of their events but the lack of depth kept them from a victory.
The girls got six of the 12 first place finishes and still managed to come back to Portland with a win.
The Jay County High School girls swim team managed a 99-84 victory over the Norwell Knights, while the boys fell 94-89.
The JCHS girls won six of the 12 events. Maria Laux claimed two of the victories including the 50-yard freestyle in 26.55 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 1 minute, 0.69 seconds.
The other wins for the girls came from Elly Bryum (100 butterfly), Kali Wendel (200 freestyle), the 200 freestyle relay team and the 400 freestyle relay team. The Patriots also had eight runner-up finishes and placed third seven times.
Cooper Glentzer and Grady Warvel led the Jay County boys with two wins each. Glentzer topped the 100 butterfly (56.94) and the 500 freestyle (5:19.15), while Warvel won the 200 individual medley (2:11.49) and 100 freestyle (52.41).
The Patriot boys claimed four more individual victories.
Peyton Yowell (50 freestyle) and Carson Westgerdes (100 breaststroke) claimed the individual wins while the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay teams also topped the field.
Getting matches
NEW HAVEN — The Jay County girls wrestling team fell to the New Haven Bulldogs 30-24 on Thursday.
The Patriots (5-2) made an effort to match girls up so that they would be able to wrestle matches, resulting in the loss rather than having girls wrestle at their true weight and taking forfeits.
As a result, Jay County, which was riddled with injuries and illness, was forced to take forfeits in six weight classes, resulting in the loss.
No. 6 Katie Rowles and Madison Gage both won by pins in the 105 and 155-pound weight classes. The other two returning Patriots from last year, No. 8 Amara Crawford and Maleah Parsons, both took wins via forfeit.
Boys split
BLUFFTON — The Jay County Junior High School boys basketball team split with Bluffton on Thursday evening.

Carson Pfeiffer powered the seventh grade team with 20 points, but didn’t receive enough support for the win. Sawyer Smitley added five points, while Calvin Jessup had three.
