Wendel, Jutte get All-Ohio honors

The Indians found some success on the field and were rewarded with a run in the playoffs.

A month later, a pair of Indians were recognized at the state level.

Reece Wendel and Breaker Jutte of the Fort Recovery High School football team were both named to the Division VII third team All-Ohio.

Wendel made it on the offensive side of the ball at the running back position. The senior carried the ball 184 times throughout the season to for 1,341 yards. He also punched in 14 touchdowns.

Jutte received honors for his defensive work, earning a spot as a linebacker.

Jutte made 75 tackles, including 53 solo tackles. Among them were 7.5 tackles for a loss of 24.8 yards. Jutte sacked opposing quarterbacks 2.5 times for 13.5 yards. He broke up three passes and intercepted one with a 14-yard return. The junior also forced one fumble.

Wendel and Jutte’s efforts helped lead Fort Recovery to a 7-6 record and seventh in the Midwest Athletic Conference at 3-5. The Tribe only fell in the regional semifinal to top-ranked Marion Local.


Tribe falls

MARIA STEIN, Ohio — Bridget Homan had a career day, but it wasn’t enough as the Fort Recovery girls basketball team fell to the Marion Local Flyers 47-29 in the MAC opener Thursday.

Homan posted a career-high 19 points. She made a pair of baskets in the first and second quarters and hit two free throws as well for 10 first-half points. She found the hoop three more times in the third quarter and went 2-for-3 at the charity stripe, but only scored one more point in the fourth.

Makenna Huelskamp was the only other Indian to score more than one basket. Cameron Muhlenkamp, Paisley Hart and Ivy Tobe scored the other points for Fort Recovery (0-6, 0-1 MAC).

Kate Ashman led Marion Local (3-3, 1-1 MAC) with 12 points.


Smith stays strong

TROTWOOD, Ohio — Caleb Smith continued his strong start to the season as the Fort Recovery swim team competed at the Warrior Wayne Invite hosted by Trotwood on Thursday.

Smith broke his own school record in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1 minute, 9.09 seconds to claim second and help the Tribe boys finish 13th of 19 teams with 58 points. The girls gained 71 points for 11th of 19 schools. Bellbrook won the boys meet with 317 points while 251 claimed the top spot for Centerville.

Smith also finished third in the 100 freestyle (56.31), while Carson Fullenkamp claimed fifth in the 200 individual medley (2:27.24) and eighth in the 100 butterfly (1:05.22).

The girls also had four top-10 finishes. Two of them belonged to Livy Timmerman in the 100 freestyle (sixth – 1:03.62) and the 200 IM (ninth – 2:51.61). The other top-10 finish for the FRHS girls came from Autumn Leuthold in the 100 breaststroke, in which she claimed ninth in 1:26.15.

The Indians opened the meet with a seventh-place finish in the 200 medley relay with a team of Claire Wenning, Leuthold, Emily Boeckman and Timmerman. They swam a time of 2:18.64.
