Patriots take second in ACAC duals

The Patriots narrowly fell to the Tigers and couldn’t handle the third-ranked team in Class 1A. But four more victories was enough for the runner-up spot.

The Class 2A No. 8 Jay County High School boys wrestling team finished as the runner-up at the Allen County Athletic Conference duals it hosted on Saturday by beating Woodlan (75-6), Southern Wells (64-18), Heritage (53-19) and Class 1A No. 6 South Adams (43-30).

The Patriots (7-2) did fall to the third-ranked Adams Central Jets 53-19 and barely fell to the Bluffton Tigers 39-38 as well.

Three Patriots, No. 16 Alan Ortiz, Sylas Wenk and Mitchell Byrum, were perfect on the day. Byrum won his sole match at the 106-pound weight class over South Adams’ William Foust in 16 seconds. Ortiz and Wenk went 7-0 in the 285 and 120 weight classes, respectively, while picking up points in five more matches due to forfeit.

Other strong performances came from Jason Landers (138 – 5-1), Alexander Rivers (126 – 4-1), Freddie Lingo (215 – 4-2) and Bryan Fields (190 – 4-2).


Thien powers

FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery girls bowling team picked up a big win over the Minster Wildcats 2,448-2,040 on Saturday at Miracle Lanes.

Lilah Thien rolled games of 215 and 211 pins for the match-high series of 426. The closest bowler to her was teammates Jadyn Wyerick and Deanna Brown with series of 357 and 354, respectively.

The top performance for Minster (1-3, 0-1 Midwest Athletic Conference) came from Sawyer Sharp with a 340 series.

Other scores from the individual games that helped lift the Indians (3-1, 1-0 MAC) over the defending co-champs of the MAC were 311 from Claire Gaerke, 141 from Lilianna Williams and 106 from Malia Grisez.

FRHS also beat the Wildcats in the baker games, totalling 753 pins to 646.


Three titles

FINDLAY, Ohio — Katie Rowles, Maleah Parsons and Amara Crawford all took home some hardware as the trio led Jay County’s girls wrestling team to a fifth-place finish at the Northwestern Dreamcatcher tournament hosted by Findlay on Saturday.

The Patriots finished with a team score of 113 points to reach the top five in the 24-team field. Memorial won the event with 209 points.

The sixth-ranked Rowles went 3-0 in the 100-pound weight class before pinning Mila Cruz of Watkins Memorial 11 seconds into the second period.

Parsons also needed a pair of wins before she pinned the third-seeded Addyson Roby of Indiana Lake 45 seconds into the championship match of the 135 bracket.

No. 10 Crawford beat four opponents, including Bellefontaine’s Rylee Yelton with five seconds left in the first period of the 170 championship match.

Chloe Torres (105) and Madison Gage (155) both claimed fifth place in their respective weight classes.


Acheson leads

FORT RECOVERY — Gabe Acheson had a strong day to lead the Fort Recovery boys bowling team past the Minster Wildcats 2,750-2,351 at Miracle Lanes on Saturday in the MAC opener.

In back-to-back games, Acheson knocked over pins to total scores of 202 for the match-high series of 404.

A.J. Siefring was the only other Indian to bowl both individual games, earning a 378 series.

The high game for Fort Recovery (5-0, 1-0 MAC) came from Reece LeFevre with a 224. Carter Korte led Minster (0-2, 0-1 MAC) with the match-high game of 228 and 149 for a 377 series.

Troy Post also produced a score above 200 pins with a 221.

Baker games of 196 and 195 for a series of 849 while Minster trailed with 805.


Two cuts made

The Jay County winter swim team came out on top as it hosted the Jay Winter Invite on Saturday, while swimmers made two state cuts and 12 divisional cuts.

Jay County racked up 39 victories throughout the meet to lead to the first-place finish.

Carsyn Guggenbiller and Hayden Guggenbiller both made state cuts in the 50-yard butterfly and 200 individual medley, respectively. Hayden Guggenbiller was also one of Jay County’s two high-point winners as she topped the 8-and-younger girls. Cooper Glentzer joined her with the most points of the 15-and-older boys.

Hailey Wenning accounted for four of the 12 new divisional cuts with low times in the 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and 100 freestyle.

Other divisional cuts came from Riley Clifton (100 freestyle and 500 freestyle), Lydia Hoevel (100 backstroke), Kynlee Homan (100 backstroke and 200 individual medley), Jaley Knapschafer (50 freestyle), Aubrey Millspaugh (200 breaststroke) and Maddie Thuerer (50 butterfly).


Flipsters compete

INDIANAPOLIS — The JC Flipsters gymnastics team competed at the Hoosier Cup Invitational over the weekend.

The Flipsters had two athletes claim first place all-around in the meet.

Emma Robinson claimed the top spot in the Xcel Silver Junior B division with 37.6 points. She topped the vault with 9.425 points, while finishing second on the beam and the floor.

Emma Fisher earned the other all-around victory with 36.05 points in the Xcel Gold division. She also won the vault with 9.275 points, while placing second and the bars and third on the floor competition.

Allie Evans finished second all-around in the Xcel Platinum division with 35.625 points, while Lettie VanSkyock’s 35.975 points in the Xcel Bronze Child A division earned fifth place to lead the Flipsters.
