A Portland teen died in a traffic collision on Saturday.
Angelina J. Geesaman, 16, suffered severe internal injuries in the collision at the intersection of county road 700 East and Indiana 26.
She was pronounced dead at the scene, confirmed Jay County coroner Brayden Fields on Sunday.
Isaac M. Springer, 18, Pennville, was driving south on county road 700 East about 12:40 p.m. Saturday with Geesaman as his passenger. He told police he didn’t see the stop sign at its intersection with Indiana 26 until it was too late, and he said his 1984 Chevrolet Corvette’s brakes locked up as he attempted to stop. Springer’s vehicle slid through the intersection into the path of an eastbound 2014 Dodge Ram 2500.
Mitchell D. Rockwell, 22, rural Portland, attempted to hit the brakes on his Ram 2500 and swerved to the right but was unable to avoid his vehicle colliding with Springer’s passenger side door. Both vehicles left the road and came to a stop in a yard southeast of the intersection. Springer’s vehicle spun a few times before coming to a stop, according to a Jay County Sheriff’s Office report.
Springer sustained a minor head injury. Rockwell and Springer were administered alcohol and drug blood tests, with results pending.
Both their vehicles were towed, with damage estimated between $25,000 and $50,000.
An autopsy is planned for this week. Indiana State Police are handling the investigation.
