ST. HENRY, Ohio and BERNE — The Indians suffered a tough loss on Wednesday, killing their Midwest Athletic Conference title hopes, but they came back to dominate a team that sat atop the MAC and edged out a ranked team from Indiana.
The Fort Recovery High school softball team bounced back after a loss to Parkway to beat St. Henry 27-9 and the Class 3A No. 5 South Adams Starfires 7-6 on Thursday and Friday, respectively.
The Indians (13-7, 5-2 MAC) went for the jugular early against St. Henry (8-11, 5-1 MAC), scoring 11 runs in the first inning. They also put up 12 in the fourth while plating just a pair in the third and fifth frames.
Jenna Homan, Kayla Heitkamp and Layla Armstrong all hit home runs in the game, while leading FRHS with seven, six and four RBIs, respectively.
The win over St. Henry, and a loss for Minster against Marion Local, guaranteed the Indians will finish tied for second in the MAC.
Fort Recovery put up three runs in the fifth and seventh innings to take down the Starfries (13-3).The fifth inning runs came from an Ava Grisez single and a passed ball. Emma Will singled and Homan doubled in the seventh to put the Tribe up 7-3.
Homan gave up three runs to SAHS in the final inning, but held on to pick up the win in both games.
Tribe splits
FORT RECOVERY — Fort Recovery’s baseball team split a pair of games on Thursday and Friday, falling short of St. Henry 15-10 before beating Crestview 8-5.
The Indians (13-6, 4-5 MAC) held a 6-2 lead heading into the fourth inning against St. Henry (10-6, 6-2 MAC), but gave up eight runs in the frame and weren’t able to climb back.
Alex Gaerke led the Tribe’s offense with four RBIs on two hits, including a double.
Colson Post suffered the loss, giving up six unearned runs in the fourth inning, while just recording two outs. He gave up four hits and one walk.
Fort Recovery bounced back as it scored seven runs in the first inning against Crestview (7-9). Runs scored on a Brodie Hart walk, a Caden Homan single, a wild pitch, a Post triple and a single by Reece Wendel.
Dylan Klenke pitched a complete game to earn the victory. Of the five runs scored against Klenke, only three were earned.
Three titles
COLDWATER, Ohio — The Fort Recovery girls track team finished fifth out of six teams at the Mercer County track meet hosted by Coldwater on Thursday, while the boys team fell to sixth.
The Indian girls scored 58 points, beating out Parkway (41.5) for fifth. Coldwater won the meet with 175.5 points. The FRHS boys only managed 10 points, while Marion Local claimed the county crown with 170.5.
Anna Roessner and Karlie Niekamp led the Indians, combining for 34 points. Roessner put work in the 100-meter and 400-meter dashes, winning both events with times of 12.16 second and 57.49, respectively.
Niekamp chucked her discus 116 feet, 2 inches to claim the top spot in the event. Elisa Evers followed on Niekamp’s heels for second place with a throw of 107 feet, 1 inch. Niekamp also finished fourth in the shot put with a mark of 30 feet, 8 ½ inches.
Other points for the girls came from:
•Riley Heitkamp in the 3,200 run (third - 13 minutes, 12.31 seconds)
•Madison Heitkamp in the 100 hurdles (fourth - 17.98) and the 300 hurdles (fourth - 53.29)
•Kennedy Muhlenkamp in the 800 run (fifth - 2:35.46)
Only two boys finished in the top six for FRHS. Isaac Roessner placed fourth in the long jump with a distance of 19 feet, 2 inches.
Carson Fullenkamp finished fifth in the shot put with a throw that traveled 42 feet, 2 inches.
The other points came from the 4x400 relay team that finished fourth in 3:53.51.
