HAGERSTOWN — One good inning was all the Patriots needed to claim game No. 1.

The Tigers came back with a vengeance in the second game that the Patriots couldn’t slow down.

Jay County High School’s baseball team split a pair of games with the Hagerstown Tigers on Saturday. The Patriots claimed the first contest 6-2 before falling 7-4 in game No. 2.

JCHS (6-10) gave up a pair of runs in the second inning, but got the offensive lift it needed in the fifth. They plated six runs in the frame on a three-RBI double from Carter Fugiett, a Joe Geesaman single, an error and a passed ball.

Zedrian Vazquez picked up the victory, giving up two runs on four hits through six innings.

Hagerstown (10-6) struck first in the second contest, scoring three runs in the first inning. It added three more runs in the third inning and a final one in the sixth. Jay County managed to plate a pair in the fifth and seventh frames.

Bye to open

The Fort Recovery baseball team received a No. 2 seed in the OHSAA Division VI Southwest 3 District tournament on Sunday and opens with a first-round bye.

Its first game, the district opener, will be played on May 28 at 5 p.m. against the winner of eighth-seeded National Trail (5-13) and No. 9 seed Twin Valley South (5-13).

The Tribe (13-6) is set up to face either the No. 4 seed Northeastern (4-5) or sixth-seeded Legacy Christian (10-6) in the district championship on May 30.

Should the Indians make it to the regional, they would face the winner of the Southwest 1 bracket. Both No. 1 seeds, Summit Country Day (13-8) and Dayton Christian (13-5), preside in that bracket.

FRHS avoids seeing another Midwest Athletic Conference team until the regional final at the earliest.
