Redkey woman died in fire on Monday
REDKEY — A woman died Monday after her bedroom caught on fire.
Lana Roberts, 18, was pronounced dead at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie after being transported there for treatment of injuries from the fire. She sustained severe burns all over her body.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Jay County Sheriff Ray Newton and Delaware County coroner Gavin Greene indicated they don’t believe foul play was involved.
Emergency responders received a call about a fire at 19 N. Union St., Redkey, about 8:13 p.m. Monday.
Redkey Fire Chief Randy Young said the fire started in an upstairs bedroom, mostly keeping the flames contained to the room and causing smoke damage throughout the house.
Redkey Fire Department arrived on scene about 8:18 p.m. Monday, putting out the flames in about 20 minutes. Approximately 15 Redkey firefighters responded, along with eight from Dunkirk Fire Department. Jay County Sheriff’s Office, Jay Emergency Medical Service and Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office also responded to the scene.
Firefighters pulled Roberts out of the fire and EMS workers transported her to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.
Delaware County Coroner’s Office pronounced her dead at 9:35 p.m. Monday.
Authorities conducted an autopsy Tuesday morning. Results are pending.
Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office and Jay County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the fire.
