Brown delivers winner against Heritage

Three runs in the sixth tied the game and three more in the seventh gave the opponents a lead.

But the home team had the answer with four runs in the bottom half for the walk-off win.

Leighton Brown delivered the winning blow for the Jay County High School baseball team as it took down the Heritage Patriots 11-10 on Thursday.

Jay County (9-10, 4-2 Allen County Athletic Conference) trailed HHS (13-5, 2-3 ACAC) by three runs heading into the final inning.

Carter Fugiett opened the frame with a single before Joe Geesaman went down on strikes. Gavin Byrum and Aiden Phillips both reached base on errors to load the bases. Grant Wendel drove the first run in on a single before Brady Jetmore’s single tied the game at 10-10. Drew Schemenaur walked to load the bases before Brown sent a ball to center field, allowing for Wendel to score on the sacrifice fly to end the game.

Geesaman finished as Jay County’s offensive leader with four RBIs on two home runs.

A.J. Myers picked up the win after throwing the final two innings.


Walked off

WAPAKONETA, Ohio — The Fort Recovery baseball team couldn’t finish off Wapakoneta as it gave up five runs in the seventh inning before getting walked off in the 10th inning 10-9 on Thursday.

The Indians (14-7) had a strong fourth inning, in which they scored five runs, to build a 9-4 advantage on Wapakoneta (14-3) for its final half inning. The Tribe couldn’t hold on as three hits, a sacrifice fly, an error and a hit batter lead to five runs.

The winning run came unearned for WHS as Daron Houser reached on an error to open the 10th inning. Preston Hinkle followed with a single before Caden Homan recorded a pair of outs. But Jarrett Mullen ended the game right there with a double to drive in Houser.

Brodie Hart led FRHS with a trio of RBIs on two hits. Caden Grisez added three hits and three runs.


DeHoff leads

Cody DeHoff led a trio of scores in the low 40s for the Jay County boys golf team Thursday in a 174-184 victory over the visiting South Adams Starfires.

DeHoff led the Patriots with a 41 at Portland Golf Club, including pars on each of the final four holes of the front nine. He also had pars on the third and four holes, both par 4s.

Griffin Byrum followed one stroke behind DeHoff with a 42, and Tucker Griffin shot a 44. Dawson Goldsworthy completed the JCHS team score with a 47.

Isaac Homan’s 49 did not factor into the team total.

The Patriots won the junior varsity match 204-234.


Expected to play

Jay County’s Hallie Schwieterman was listed as a player expected to participate in the 23rd Indiana Basketball Coaches Association/IHSAA Top 100 Underclassment Showcase on Wednesday.

The showcase will take place on June 12 at Ben Davis High School and is expected to include 132 high school girls basketball players from around the state that aren’t graduating in 2025.

The showcase will all happen in one session, beginning at 12:30 p.m. with an expected finishing time around 6 p.m. The event is open to the public with a $5 admission fee.

The event is also occurring during the NCAA’s “scholastic viewing period,” allowing Division I coaches to attend.


Glessner leads

MARION — The Jay County Junior High School seventh grade baseball team picked up a 9-5 victory over McCullough on Thursday.

Jaylen Brown and Kendel Glessner led the way for the Patriots with two RBIs apiece. Jenson Edwards and Eli Homan also drove in runs.

McCullough took a 4-3 lead in the third inning before JCJH reclaimed it with a three-run fourth inning. The Patriots scored three more times in the sixth to seal the game away.

Glessner earned the win for Jay County after tossing three innings and only allowing one run to score on two hits and three walks.


Poet, Cooks win

Poet and Cooks Nursery both picked up wins in Portland Junior League Rookie baseball action on Thursday. Poet took down Barnetts 16-1, while Cooks Nursery topped Matt’s Garage 11-9.

Leading the way for Poet were James Bruggeman, Kalloway Gary, Marshall Hemmelgarn, Nolan Homan and Landon Minnich, all with three hits apiece.

Powering Barnetts’ offense were Adam Brunnemer and Dax Davis with two hits each.

Griffin Halfner drove in five runs for Cooks on just two hits. Steven Robins and Kayden Alberson plated a pair each as well with five hits between them.

Parker Eley led Matt’s Garage as he drove in three runs. Jack Huelskamp also put together a solid day, going 3-for-3 at the plate.


Barnett powers

Madden Barnett had his hands all over Lions Club’s 12-4 victory against Southern Thunder in Portland Junior League Willie Mayes baseball on Thursday.

Barnett led the team with three hits, a double and two singles, while driving in two runs. He was also the winning pitcher.

Chett Childress followed him up with a double and an RBI, while Drew Lingo smacked two singles and Landyon Wright had one.

Corbin Hutzler led Southern Thunder with a single.
