Tribe takes two

Local Roundup

CELINA, Ohio — In the second match of the day, the Indians didn’t have the prettiest baker scores, but individual efforts were more than enough to push them to a sweep.

The Fort Recovery High School boys bowling team picked up a pair of wins at Plaza Lanes on Saturday, beating St. Henry in a nonconference match 2,478-2,438 and Van Wert 2,261-2,172.

While the Tribe (3-0) only totaled 691 pins in the five baker games, Anthony Roessner, Troy Post and Garrett Diller put up strong performances in the individual games. The trio had series of 388, 334 and 298 pins, respectively.

Also rolling one individual game each were Gabe Acheson (179), A.J. Siefring (156), Leland Wilson (112) and Zach Ervin (103).

Siefring led the Indians in the opening match against St. Henry with games of 225 and 191 for a 416 series. Roessner followed with a 371 series.

Bowling in just one individual game each were Wilson (183), Acheson (175), Riley Stammen (149) and Troy Post (129).

Referendum passed

The OHSAA passed an emergency bylaw referendum to allow high school athletes to sign and benefit from contracts surrounding name, image and likeness (NIL).

The new bylaw allows high school student athletes to receive compensation from businesses in return for use of their name, image and likeness for services such as endorsements, social media, public appearances and licensing, based solely on the athlete’s athletic notoriety.

The bylaw specifically prohibits pay-to-play or the idea of paying athletes simply for the sake of competing. It also does not allow for the forming of collectives, or groups of alumni who pool donations and fundraising through NIL for student athletes.

Girls power

CONVERSE — The Jay County winter swim team competed at the Oak Hill Eagle Invitational on Saturday.

The Jay County girls topped the entire field, while the boys and girls combined finished just behind host Oak Hill.

Brea Steiner, Maddy Timmerman and Emalee Aker all earned divisional cuts in the 100-yard freestyle.

Four Jay County girls finished as the high point winners as well.

Hayden Guggenbiller dominated the 8-and-younger division, while Isla Kaiser took care of the other end of the age groups by topping the 13-and-older girls.

In between, Jaley Knapschafer controlled the 9-10-year-old division, while Carsyn Guggenbiller earned the top spot of the 11-12-year-old girls.
