Jay county boys tennis picks up sixth win over Rebels

Doubles leads Patriots against Randolph Southern


LYNN — The Patriots have seen a pair of their potential sectional opponents. They have also tallied two wins against the postseason rivals.

The Jay County High School boys tennis team beat the Randolph Southern Rebels 3-2 on Tuesday.

Clark Wellman got a free victory via forfiet at No. 3 singles due to Randolph Southern not being able to field the position after an injury.

Both doubles teams picked up wins for Jay County (6-3) as well.

Kadyn Carpenter and Alex Miller beat Jacob Flaugh and Diego Soria 6-3, 5-7, 6-2. Gabe Overton and Brock Wasson didn’t need a third set, but still needed a tiebreaker to defeat Grady Coyle and Chevie Parsons 6-1, 7-6 (7-1).

Paul Dirksen and Henry Dirksen both suffered losses at the No. 1 and 2 singles positions, respectively. The former fell to Noah Allen 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, while the latter lost to Braden Austin 6-4, 6-4.


Pats sweep

Jay County’s volleyball team swept the Bluffton Tigers 25-14, 25-17, 25-18 in the Allen County Athletic Conference opener for both teams Tuesday.

Jay County’s middle blockers provided a bulk of the offense with Maria Hemmelgarn and Mya Kunkler earning eight kills and Brenna Schmiesing adding seven. Elizabeth Barnett also put down six balls.

From behind the line, the Patriots (6-4, 1-0 ACAC) had three aces with Schmiesing, Kayla Jetmore and Paisley Fugiett each dropping one in.

Schmiesing also led at the net by blocking Bluffton (4-9, 0-1ACAC) three times.

Lani Muhlenkamp had the team-high in digs with 15, while Fugiett’s 20 assists was the most of JCHS.


Jay defeated

YORKTOWN — The Jay County girls golf team fell to the Yorktown Tigers 198-228 at The Players Club on Tuesday.

Grace Turner of Yorktown earned match medalist honors with 42 strokes, while Elizabeth Brunswick and Alexa Ridenour led the way for the Patriots (2-9) with rounds of 56. Brunswick shot bogeys on the fourth and seventh holes, while Ridenour made par on the fourth and a bogey on the seventh.

Erin Aker followed one stroke behind with a 47. She also had two bogeys on the third and fourth holes.

Crystal Swartzentruber rounded out the team score with a 59 in her first varsity appearance since Thursday.

Reny Lingo carded a 60 and Taven Bently shot 61, but neither score affected the team’s final.

Wes-Del also competed, but didn’t have enough for a team score.
