JCHS girls soccer wins ACAC match

BERNE — The Patriots got off to a good start in Allen County Athletic Conference play, getting wins against Heritage, Woodlan and South Adams.

When they made the return trip to take on the Starfires, they held strong to put themselves in control of their own destiny.

Jay County High School’s soccer team picked up its fourth ACAC victory on Saturday by beating the South Adams Starfires 3-1.

Avery Snow got the ball rolling for the Patriots (6-3, 4-0 ACAC) by finding the net for her first career goal with 26 minutes, 57 seconds, remaining in the first half.

Jay County had a few chances to extend the lead off the foot of London Lloyd, but both times the play got called dead. The Starfires (4-6, 1-3 ACAC) took advantage to tie the match up 1-1 prior to the intermission.

It took 25:22 once JCHS got back out onto the pitch, but eventually Lloyd netted her third goal of the year on an assist from Aixa Lopez. Lloyd later assisted Raylin Hummer to take a 3-1 advantage.

Maleah Parsons made three saves for the Patriots, while backline defender Ariel Beiswanger added on after the ball rebounded.

JCHS has three remaining ACAC matches at Southern Wells and Woodlan and against Heritage.


Jay splits

NOBLESVILLE — The Jay County volleyball team split four matches on Saturday at a tournament hosted by Noblesville.

Jay County (9-6) fell to New Castle (12-2) 25-19, 19-25, 15-7 in the opening match. 

The Patriots bounced back with a 25-22, 25-23 victory over Class 2A No. 3 Muncie Burris (11-4).

JCHS swung back down with a 25-16, 17-25, 15-11 loss to Brebeuf Jesuit (9-8). It finished the day with a 25-13, 25-23 win over Union County (6-12).

Hallie Schwieterman led the Patriots with 22 kills, while Elizabeth Barnett, Brenna Schmiesing and Maria Hemmelgarn all had 15.

Hemmelgarn led with 13 blocks, while Schmiesing followed with 12 and Mya Kunkler totaled nine.

Paisley Fugiett had a team-high 59 assists, while Lani Muhlenkamp led on the back line with 32 digs. Kayla Jetmore had 28 digs, while Fugiett followed with 27 and Barnett had 25.

Jay had 13 aces on the day.
