PONETO — The Raiders formed a soccer team for the first time this season. After one meeting on the pitch, the Patriots can say they hold the series lead 1-0.
Jay County High School’s girls soccer team had nine different girls score in Thursday’s 12-0 victory over the Southern Wells Raiders.
Aixa Lopez, Maria Laux and Gabby Gibson all led the way with two goals apiece. Lopez’s first goal came in the first half and she scored a second on an assist from London Lloyd . Laux was assisted by Finely Hatzell on her first score – Laux assisted Finley Hatzell for the previous score – before putting the ball in the goal herself to enter the half 7-0. Gibson scored her first career goal in the first half before putting another in on Emma Hatzell’s first career assist prior to the mercy rule.
Emma Hatzell provided her second career assist to aid Araitz Lekue Magro on her first career goal.
Other goals for the Patriots (7-3, 5-0 Allen County Athletic Conference) came from Avery Snow (assisted by Raylin Hummer), Charlee Peters, Ariel Beiswanger (assisted by Lopez) and Hummer.
Maleah Parsons locked down the goal against the Raiders (0-8, 0-3 ACAC).
Smith leads
PIQUA, Ohio — Caleb Smith lead the Fort Recovery boys golf team to a season-low 156-175 victory over the Newton Indians in Thursday’s regular season finale at Echo Hills Golf Course.
Smith earned match medalist honors with a one-under-par 35. (Rhett Koffer led Newton with a 39.) Smith made par six times and despite a bogey on the 18th hole, birdies on the 13th and 16th to keep him under par.
Reece LeFevre wasn’t far behind as he carded a 36 for Fort Recovery (8-6). He made three birdies and four pars.
Garrett Diller set a new career low at 39 strokes. Andrew Rehmert rounded out the team score with a 46.
Luke Fortkamp and Carson Fullenkamp shot a 49 and 53, respectively, that didn’t impact the final.
Jay sweeps
CONNERSVILLE — Jay County’s volleyball team swept the Connersville Spartans 25-19, 25-21, 25-22 on Thursday.
Mya Kunkler followed up a strong match against Adams Central with a 10-kill match. She also had six blocks.
Hallie Schwieterman also had a strong offensive game with nine kills and she served up all four of the Patriots’ aces.
Paisley Fugiett had the high for Jay County (11-6) in assists at 32. Elizabeth Barnett had the most digs with 18, while Kayla Jetmore added 17.
Fell in five
FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery volleyball team lost a five-set match against the Division VI No. 6 Coldwater Cavaliers 18-25, 25-14, 28-26, 25-27, 15-8 on Thursday.
Kayla Gaerke led the offense with 17 kills and Cameron Muhlenkamp added 15. Bridget Homan put nine balls down and seven more came from Kenna Dues.
The Indians (3-8, 0-5 Midwest Athletic Conference) put up a strong defensive effort at the net. Brynn Willman had a team-high seven blocks, Alexis Grisez added six and Homan had four.
FRHS dropped 14 aces on the Cavaliers (10-3, 4-1 MAC) with Muhlenkamp leading with four.
Kayden Ranly had the most assists for Fort Recovery at 30, while Muhlenkamp’s 17 digs were a team high.
Final loss
MINSTER, Ohio — The Fort Recovery girls golf team fell in their final nine-hole match of the regular season 186-188 against Fort Loramie at Arrowhead Golf Club on Thursday.
Olivia Knapke and Mallory Evers both shot the low score of 44 strokes for the Indians (11-3). Moey Schafer of Fort Loramie earned match medalist honors with a 41.
Evvie Briner, Georgia Wenning and Emily Boeckman, who played in her third varsity match, all shot 50s to make up the rest of the team score. Cora Pearson finished with a 55 that didn’t impact the team final.
The Tribe will finish the regular season in the MAC Tournament on Saturday at Stillwater Valley Golf Club.
