FRHS girls golf earns second in sectional

BRADFORD, Ohio — The girls suffered heartbreak last season in the first round of the postseason.

As they traveled back to the village their hearts were still slightly twinged, but the joy they had overwhelmed any hurt.

The Fort Recovery High School girls golf team wound up second at the OHSAA Division II sectional golf tournament at Stillwater Valley Golf Club after the fifth score broke a tie for first, but it still punched its ticket as a team to the district.

The top four teams qualified along with the top four individuals not on advancing teams. The Tribe finished with 402 strokes, tying Fort Loramie for the sectional title. The tie was broken by the scores of the fifth golfer as Ava Schafer’s 107 beat out the 110 of Cora Pearson.

While the Indians didn’t come out with the sectional title, they still advanced to the district tournament at Pipestone Golf Club on Oct. 1.

Mallory Evers led the way for Fort Recovery with a round of 95. She shot a 47 on the back nine and a 48 on the front to earn the seventh best score at the sectional.

Olivia Knapke fell behind one stroke to be part of a four-way tie for eighth-place with a 96.

Georgia Wenning’s round of 103 ended up as the 17th best score alongside Fort Loramie’s Kim Billings.

Evvie Briner rounded out the team score by carding a 108 that claimed 25h.

While Pearson’s 110 strokes didn’t contribute to the team’s total, it placed 27th and affected the sectional title.
