AS I SEE IT

Autumn is nearly here

It may not be autumn yet, but it won’t be long before it is here.

Sugar used as excuse to talk

My daughter Beth called yesterday evening. She wanted to know if she could substitute brown sugar for white sugar in a cookie recipe. She could have looked up her question and had reliable results in minutes. She chose to call her mom instead.

Slugs have returned

Welcome to Slug Wars part two. We were hoping that the Slug Wars were over. We were disappointed and downright wrong.

Slugs invade columnist’s backyard

I probably should save this column for October as it has a definite ick factor.

Garden is in full swing in August

I find it hard to believe that August is here already.

Couldn’t ask for a better Saturday

It began with a simple message from a friend.

Things will get done in their time

Most of the things on my to-do lists are unimportant.

Gardening became a new hobby

The first batch of green beans are bubbling on the stove. I picked the last handful this morning.

Recognize hard work going into fair

It’s fair week. There are rides to ride, games to play and animals to show. More than all that, there are people to talk to. It seems that half of the town along with people from the surrounding areas are on the fairgrounds at any given time.

Independence Day brings fun

Independence Day will be over by the time you read this. Most of the fireworks will have already given their all. There are always a few that will not go boom until a couple of weeks from now.

Life is different for every person

I woke up to the delicious sound of a summer rain. This was no gentle tapping of raindrops gently watering the earth. Instead, it was the clash of water pelting everything in its path. The low rumble of thunder provided the background noise.

Fifty years ago, daughter was born

Fifty years ago, give or take a day or two, I was as big as a house. My daughter would be born soon. My mother-in-law had just gotten out of the hospital. She decided it was a good idea to go to Mumma’s for strawberries.

Shows provide ideas and entertain

We watch a lot of home improvement shows. I always wonder what kind of jobs people have that allows them to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on something they are going to tear apart.

Flowers hold memories

I was just finishing up on one of the flower beds when a guy I didn’t know stopped by.
