Plans progress
The county is moving forward with plans to update local responders’ radio systems. Jay County Commissioners approved a $178,500 contract with Ritter Strategic Services for planning, procurement, engineering, project management and other work related to switching the county to the Integrated Public Safety Commission’s 800 megahertz statewide system.
More funding earns first approval

Mayor Jack Robbins asked Dunkirk City Council to consider various issues — salaries for city employees, charges for fire runs and housing development — during its meeting Monday.
Dudelston files formal complaint
Dave Dudelston has filed a complaint with the Indiana Public Access Counselor’s Office against Redkey Town Council.
Redkey hires new employees
It also heard longtime town employee Randy Young, who worked for the street, water and wastewater departments, has resigned.
County highway will get new position
Jay County Highway Department is getting a new position. Jay County Council agreed to create a position for assistant superintendent for the department during its meeting Wednesday.
Council OKs $ for wall repair
The city will pay for repairs to the wall of a downtown building after adjacent structures were demolished.
Village, school partner on grant
The village has secured multiple grants in the last few months. Word of another recently came from the governor’s office. Fort Recovery Village Council heard Monday the village and Fort Recovery Local Schools were awarded $439,589 for construction projects focused on safety for children walking or biking to school.
Board agrees to building repairs
Portland Board of Works on Thursday gave preliminary approval to hiring Trisco Systems to repair the north wall of 206 N. Meridian St. following the demolition of the building to the north.
County reviews EDIT $ requests
Commissioners discussed plans to fund different organizations in 2025 during a meeting following their regular session Monday.
Dunkirk trash rates will go up in August
Trash collection rates are going up. Dunkirk City Council on Monday approved increasing trash pick-up rates to $15 per month beginning Aug. 1.
Funds OK’d for recovery facility report
Progress on Jay County’s recovery home is on the way. Jay County Commissioners on Monday approved utilizing $11,000 for a preliminary engineering report on the new prospective sober living facility in Portland.
County denies funding without contract
Commissioners heard a request Monday from JCDC board president Angie Paxson and executive director Travis Richards to disburse county funds for the first half of 2024. The county and JCDC have yet to come to a contract agreement for this year.
Pool heater installed
Portland Park Board heard updates from regarding Portland Water Park during its meeting Tuesday, including that the new heater at the facility has been installed and will be activated Monday.
