Police chief offers thanks
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
On Aug. 5, the Portland Police Department participated in the National Night Out.
The event was designed to: (1) heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; (2) generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime efforts; (3) strengthen neighborhood spirit and police/community partnerships; and (4) send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
The event was a success, and we are already planning for next year. I would like to thank the following for all the help they gave to make it so successful.
Jay Petroleum allowed us to use the former Shell fueling station lot. The Elks Lodge provided the drug prevention awareness trailer. Jay County Sheriff’s Office brought out several vehicles for display, set up a public information booth and provided the water. The Portland Police Department Citizens Police Academy Alumni gave out over 100 hot dogs at the event. The Portland Fire Department brought out a firetruck and explained all the equipment on it. Mayor Randy Geesaman showed his support and attended the event. The following groups came out to meet the public: police reserves, police communications, police chaplains, investigations and patrol.
I would really like to thank al the public that took time from their busy schedules to come to visit and share thoughts.
