Important pool meeting is tonight

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:
The Portland Park Board will have a very important meeting tonight at 7 p.m. at the city council chambers at the Portland Fire Station.
I would like to invite all supporters of the Jay County Summer Swim team to attend. The Park Board is currently considering a new Portland pool design that is not endorsed by the summer swim team.
As currently proposed, the summer swim team members will not be allowed to have diving starts at the shallow end of the pool. Supporters of the Jay County Summer Swim Team think this is unacceptable.
This would affect our youngest swimmers or anyone 10 and younger which is about 40 percent of our team. Young swimmers need to have as much experience as possible with diving starts so that they can fully develop their technique and become a more skilled swimmer in the future.

As one who has promoted the need for a new pool and has personally solicited funds for this pool and has made a personal contribution, I am in hopes that the Portland Park Board will agree to delay the adoption of the pool design until this matter is resolved avoiding a design flaw that will plague us for 50 years.
Our summer swim team is an outstanding program with a long winning tradition and over a 50 year history of serving our Jay County community. The team and community deserve a first class facility, and the current pool proposal does not meet those high standards.
Sincerely,
Rob Weaver
